Movie Reviews of Street Kings (+ Digital Copy) [Blu-ray]

Movie Review: A 5 star blu (no movie review)...
Summary: 5 Stars

Fox once again throws the budget into a great BD. It took two days to see everything I am writing about on this release. The film has been reviewed, torn apart, hated and liked in various other reviews so I think people have gotten a good idea about the film's premise - so we will make this review about the good stuff.

The menu navigation was brisk and straight forward on finding the main and secondary extra features. The extras list as follows:

Inside Look: 2 minute clip on Sutherland's Mirrors film.

Deleted Scenes: 15 clips totaling 12 minutes, with roughly 10 of those being something new. Includes an actual credit listing of the actors' scenes eliminated entirely from the final cut (was a nice touch).

Alternate Takes: 10 clips with varying dialogue.

Rolling with Ayer and the LAPD Tech Advisor: Essentially an 18 minute COPS episode without anyone getting out of the car; the two of them drive around LA for a day and we get stories and bites of how the morale is in LAPD, the street rules, etc.

Street Cred: 3 1/2 minutes; Another doc of how accurate they all tried to be with bits from T Crews, Cedric, etc.

Writing SK: 5 minute doc on the process.

Behind the Scenes: 4 one minute clips on training, car rigging, squibs and being on the set.

Vignettes: 4 two minute quips on certain aspects of filming.

HBO First Look: 12 minute docu similar to all of the other HBOFL pieces.

Trailers: A few non consequential Fox titles.

Under Surveillance - Inside the World of SK: This one is 36 pop-ups totaling 37 minutes that can either be watched with the film or individually without the film. When this option plays picture-in-picture you will also get the trivia track simultaneously. Between that track, the PIPs, and the director's commentary - every single aspect of what went into this film - and into the LAPD history research - is covered.

I did try to override my system and tell it to run the commentary simultaneously to the PIPs/Trivia Track but that froze up. But everything else was flawless on the quality. The picture was incredible and very trustworthy throughout. I paused and rewatched several night scenes, containing both action and still motion, and it looked crystal. The LA scenery, night panoramas of buildings, sunsets and street footage are all excellently preserved here. I know some directors prefer the Michael Mann night grain in their movies (as do I) but this film showed an awesome clarity that was relevant for the film.

The sound was mixed with a great deal of bass so my sub was tested often - I enjoyed it... The urban music, pumped cars, gun play all mixed nicely without burying the center channel.

I was impressed with the overall presentation of the film and give this BD a definite owner stamp, especially if one is onto LAPD history or wants insight mantra from Ayer and the writers.
