Movie Reviews of Street KingsMovie Review: Throw The Phonebook At 'Em Summary: 5 Stars
"Street Kings" is a modern day tale of police corruption. It doesn't quite measure up to similar films such as "Training Day" or "L.A. Confidential", but it does slightly resemble them. You may also find some character similarities...the man who will go where the law won't Officer Bud White can be seen in Detective Tom Ludlow and the crooked half gangster, half cop Alonzo can be seen in Captain Jack Wander (Forrest Whitaker). David Ayer who wrote the script for "Training Day" also directed "Street Kings" which is another reason for the similarities between the two films. However, "Street Kings" is an intense action/thriller that has originality to it.
Tom Ludlow (Keanu Reeves) is a veteran detective of the LAPD who struggles to cope with everyday life after the loss of his wife. When evidence connects him to the murder of a fellow officer, his back is put up against the wall and he begins to question the loyalty of the department he works for. He is forced to butt heads with fellow officers as well as his superiors to find out the truth before his career and maybe even his life come to an end.
Odds are if you liked "Training Day" you will enjoy "Street Kings." Don't let the fact that Keanu Reeves stars in it fool you from watching. His performance was surprisingly good. Forrest Whitaker was brilliant, aptly portraying the captain gone mad with power, willing to do anything he can to get ahead. There are some other familiar faces, Chris Evans the Human Torch himself, and Hugh Laurie whom also provided some solid acting. In the end a strong script, strong performances from the entire cast and few gun fights thrown in for good measure make this film worth watching. "Keep your eyes wide open." 4.5 out of 5.
