Movie Review: Recorded earlier, it might have been the best Salome

Catherine Malfitano's performance alone would put this production into contention as one of the best Salomes ever on DVD. Her clear, crisp, passionate singing, with every emphasis and value that Strauss intended, is synchonized perfectly with the music of the Deutsche Oper, Berlin led by Giuseppe Sinopoli.
The commanding presence of Simon Estes is accompanied by his gigantic voice, which magnifies the strong words of the prophet, John the Baptist. His is the best Jochanaan I've ever heard.
Cathy Malfitano's wordless great acting is a force even when she's not singing, as we watch her descent into insanity after her failure to seduce Jochanaan. Credit should also be given to Horst Hiestermann, whose Herod enhances the effect of this great one-act opera.
The costumes and set are not as brilliant as Karl Bohm's 1974 Salome, starring Teresa Stratas and Astrid Varnay, but the dramatic finish with an exhausted yet exultant Malfitano, puts this performance right up there among the best. If only it had been recorded when she was a bit younger, which would have been a more appropriate age for Salome.

In Petr Weigl's production of Richard Strauss's powerful and erotic one-act opera, Catherine Malfitano produces a spellbinding performance as Salome, a role which demands the utmost physical and emotional commitment throughout the complex vocal passages and choreographed scenes. During a banquet, Jochanaan (John the Baptist) proclaims, from his prison cell, the coming of the Messiah. He is brought for Salome to see and she, fascinated by him, makes an advance, which he shuns, urging her not to follow the ways of her mother, Herodias. When Jochanaan is taken back to his cell, Herod asks Salome to dance, and she agrees on condition that she will be granted a wish. After her Dance of the Seven Veils, she demands the head of Jochanaan, which Herod is forced to have brought to her. She fondles and kisses it until the revolted Herod orders his soldiers to crush her with their shields. With the Orchestra of the Deutsche Oper.
