Movie Reviews of Stop Making Sense

Movie Review: This is the most watched video I've ever seen --
Summary: 5 Stars

I have been exercising to this video by riding rollers or a wind trainer ever since it came out on video. Unfortunately, I own a Beta version of this tape and when my tape player was deemed un-repairable over a year ago I was devastated. As much as I tried, I could not locate a VHS copy or a Beta player replacement. To say the least, this video whether exercising or just watching David Byrne's performance in awe is outstanding. However, it really is best when you listen to it cranked up and working up a sweat. The performance progressively blends additional instrumental and vocal accompaniment and for the first 45 minutes gets faster and faster. This is perfect for first warming up and then just busting out a real sweat while witnessing one of the most riveting performance bands of all time. Riding rollers, a wind trainer or a treadmill is excruciatingly boring. Thank you David Byrne and Talking Heads for keeping me interested for many years and especially for brining this masterful performance out on DVD.

Movie Review: A bargain at twice the price!
Summary: 5 Stars

Being a Talking Heads fan since the early '80s and having seen this movie when it first came out in theaters back in '84, I needed no convincing to buy the DVD. After fifteen years, I found David Byrne's "character" (as he calls himself on the audio track #4 commentary) just as fresh and motivating. Tina Weymouth's (lead guitarist) rendition of the Tom-Tom Club with Chris Franz (drummer) is a great twist in the non-stop rhythm throughout the entire movie. The energy and excitement displayed by all seven performers compels you to get up and dance in front of your television. Some of the other reviewers of this DVD felt the "tacking on" of the two additional tracks from the original movie and that some of the drummer's bass notes being inaccurate were objectionable to some degree; however, since I have had only the nine song track CD of Stop Making Sense, this full length DVD version is a very welcome and a well remastered concert from fifteen years ago. Buy this DVD for keeps!

Movie Review: BossDavit
Summary: 5 Stars

What can I say after watching this video? OMG. This is what the 80's were all about. David Byrne's opening number just starts the onslaught of what is to come to you visually as well as vocally. Mr. Demme is indeed brilliant at directing this very entertaining DVD of the Heads. I can laugh about their outfits now, but they were cool in the 80's I remember. I bought this video after reminiscing about the Heads, and recalled watching it back in the 80's when it was VHS. I just had to have this DVD as part of my collection. Reliving my youth I guess you could call it.

It is an outstanding portrait of what the Talking Heads were all about. I still hear these same songs on my classic rock stations here in Pa. Just watch the manic pace of the Heads under the mastery of David Byrne's vocals and actions. I urge you to get this DVD if you are a Heads fan. The Big Suit is worth the price. The songs are great and they are played by a very talented group of individuals. You will not be sorry.

Movie Review: IF you only own one concert film
Summary: 5 Stars

This review is from a casual fan of the band before seeing "Stop Making Sense".

This is simply the best concert film I have seen. The production is great, the music energizing. Visually, you couldn't ask for more. "Stop Making Sense" will not only make you appreciate the brilliance of the Talking Heads, but of director Jonathan Demme as well. I could watch this film over and over again. The DVD is a visual improvement over the video version. The only thing I envy is that my brother was in the concert crowd and saw this being made - lucky stiff.

As for the reviewer who commented on David Byrne leaving the stage during "Genius of Love" - I doubt it was out of a lack of respect for the other members of the band. Rather, he was changing into the famous "Big Suit". Better that the Tom Tom Club play a song (and do it well) instead of dead time on stage. The scheme worked brilliantly as the entrance of the Big Suit is a major highlight of the film.

Movie Review: Making Sense...
Summary: 5 Stars

I saw the original movie in 1984. I loved it so much I saw it 2 more times with a different set of friends each time. When it became available on VHS I got it. Finally after adding my DVD theater system, I had to get this DVD for my collection. From the very start of the concert to the very end your are taken through a visual concert trip. You'll love the energy of David Byrne as well as the back up band. I cannot believe that David Byrne and the guitarist from the back up band were capable of moving and playing for as long as they did. I almost got exhausted watching it, however it was one of the made reason's I've watched this over and over. My favorite song is "Swamp", not as high-powered as "Burning Down the House", another personal favorite, but nonetheless a low-energy favorite (watch the lamp). Buy it, you'll enjoy from the unusual beginning to the moment they say "Good-Night!
