Movie Reviews of Stop Making SenseMovie Review: Timeless music! Summary: 5 Stars
I was a fan when this "movie" came out and always have been. When I saw this come out on DVD, I thought, what the heck, I'll order it. Wow, was I ever surprised! I have a pretty good surround sound system but was totally unprepared for the quality of this recording when brought into the new millenium. I listed to this in the days of vinyl or on the radio and was more than pleased at how well this transferred over to digital format. David Byrne sounds great but is even better to watch. I have no idea where he gets his energy. An interesting discovery: I like to entertain friends and family with music and most definitely like to give them the visual effects that go along with video concerts like this. What I was surprised about was how everyone responded when I put this DVD on. Those who were already fans loved it, those who never heard of Talking Heads were blown away by the music put out by these guys as well as how dynamic they are in concert. If you have any questions on whether or not to buy this, then I have your answer - DON'T hesitate, get it now, you won't be sorry.
Movie Review: this is not my beautiful DVD player !! Summary: 5 Stars
but it is my extremely entertaining, albeit "contrived" concert event. But that is not a bad thing ! as the resulting DVD manages to capture the energy and talent of a truly great American band. If I could go back in time, one of my first destinations would be the CBGB in New York City, 1977, to see the Talking Heads open for the Ramones. Obviously the Talking Heads stole every show, which is probably why the Ramones disliked them so much !And even though the four members of the "Talking Heads proper" kind of get lost in this nine-member stage ensemble, David Byrne is still the clear leader, and the contributions of the other original band members are essential to the energy of the Talking Heads experience. and what an experience it is ! Every song is an artistic presentation, with the visual effects beautifully complementing the funky, up beat, afro-synchronic musical riffs. With absolutely radical versions of Life During Wartime and Once in a Lifetime, this is my second favorite musical DVD (second only to Led Zeppelin - which is really saying something !)
Movie Review: WOW Summary: 5 Stars
Talking Heads was MY band during high school and college (1979-1987). I can still remember as if it were yesterday the first time I saw them on "Saturday Night Live." I haven't listened to them that much thought in last 15 years.
I have a HD projector that projects a 141" diagonal image on the wall. I'm using the Pioneer stereo/speakers I bought with grass cutting money in 1979 for the sound system. It can still shake the whole house at half volume. This really is home theater.
I got on a kick recently watching concert videos. Led Zeppelin is great, Rolling Stones stunk and Elvis was OK. I about cried though when I watched the Talking Heads, "Stop Making Sense." The quality of the video, audio, cinematography, musicians and staging is the best, no comparison. Watching this concert took 30 years off my age as I watched it. This movie really showcases the Talking Heads at their best and this concert is why I loved them so much when I was a kid. I've watched it twice already and I can't see getting tired of it anytime soon.
Movie Review: This will make you a fan Summary: 5 Stars
I had only been a casual Talking Heads fan thanks to Burning Down The House, I Zimbra and Cities. When I saw this film for the first time, I was hooked and became something of a fanatic. To this day, I mourn the band's break up.Starting with David Byrne and his guitar, the film opens with Pyscho Killer. This would seem an unlikely choice to start off a concert but Byrne shows the key to putting on a good show is knowing how to draw the audience in, no matter what the material. With each selection, we're introduced to another member of the band and increasingly funky songs. By the time, Bernie Worrell hits the keyboards for Slippery People, you'll be dancing around in your living room. Although Byrne is unquestionably the star of this film, you'll be riveted by the auxillary band members Worrell, percussionist Steve Scales and the back up singers. The show is simple yet builds upon layers to get the audience's attention and keep it. Today's young performers as well as their audience should be required to view this movie to see how a real concert is done.
Movie Review: Greatest of its genre Summary: 5 Stars
I first saw this at a party and was just blown away. Afterwords I figured that the movie was so great because I was drunk and there were a lot of cannabanoid molecules in the atmosphere. However, I saw the DVD again when I was of a completely straight mind and the affect was the exact same. I was just as mesmorized by the music and movements of David Byrne as I was at the party. This is no mere concert, it is the best piece of musical entertainment ever filmed. I say that because I wasn't too found of the parts of Woodstock where the camera would focus on the audience for long periods of time (except when the women were bathing) where as, while you certainly are aware of it, the audience is never visually acknowlledged in Stop Making Sence so there is no doubt that you don't miss any action. If you haven't experienced it then do so. Though, if by some miracle you don't like it, make sure you don't pass that judgement before you see Life During Wartime (obviously my personal favorite). What else can be said?
