Movie Reviews of Stop Making SenseMovie Review: Took in the movie with friends when it first hit the big screen and WOW! Summary: 5 Stars
I was a Senior in The College of Communication and several peers joined me for a matinee. The movie's beginning was interesting, odd and totally what I would expect from David Byrne and the Talking Heads. I'd been a fan for as long as they had been together. Seeing the film, the art, the simple creation of what turns into "you" being part of the set up crew, the band, the lighting, the intensity of the muscician's......that is just the start. I know when the film ended there was one last strum and the lights came on. We sat in silence and because we were exshausted. The creation of a film which can create a sense of total involvement to the point of feeling a part of the film and the sheer exshaustion was incredible. My Professor was also at the film, he was also exshausted after the film. We spent our class time discussing the film. If you do not know the "Talking Heads", don't waste anytime. Buy the DVD, get comfortable and you will never thinking of music and the sheer genius of the creation of a music video the same. It cannot be topped. One group I would pay $$$$$ to see anywhere they go if they get back together for one concert. You can't explain the film, you have to experience the film.
Movie Review: Yes, best concert film ever... and best DVD special features!! Summary: 5 Stars
Like others who have posted, this movie was what made me a Talking Heads fan, and though I never became a fanatic, this film is the concert VHS tape I have worn out the most over the years. Like Byrne says on the excellent commentary track, this was so effectively made from the audience point of view that when it screened, people applauded between songs and danced in the aisles. I know we did, way back when.
Today I got the DVD and just have to give props to the special features. There's bonus songs, the aforementioned commentary track, two 5.1 mixes, and a hiliarious 4.5 minute segment where David Byrne interviews himself. That is, David the interviewee sits in the house left chair, in his big suit. Then David the interviewer sits in the house right chair, constantly switching (in cut time) to new costumes and personas to ask the questions.
Right now, off the top of my head, if I had to rank Desert Island music DVD's, I'd go like this:
1) Talking Heads: Stop Making Sense
2) The Band: Last Waltz
3) Grateful Dead: Truckin' Off to Buffalo
4) Suzanne Vega: Live at Montreaux
5) AC/DC: Live at Donnington
Movie Review: the greatest rock movie I have seen Summary: 5 Stars
What a wonderful, original, and energizing performance. The Talking Heads can PLAY. The original 4-piece (who enter one at a time, gradually building the concert to a fever pitch by the time of "Burning Down the House") are joined by additional musicians on percussion, keys and guitar (the excitable Alex Weir on guitar is particularly memorable). The music is flawlessly executed and the excitement is stepped up by some crazy dance steps you'll be copying in your living room. The artistry is deliciously strange, and Jonathan Demme is right on as he directs the show (not showing the audience until the very end is an excellent decision I wish more concert movies would make, and thank goodness this concert precedes the MTV style of concert filming, ie. cutting away to a new camera angle every tenth of a second).
But what is truly memorable about "Stop Making Sense" is its energy, the sheer enjoyment the performers are having onstage. It's infectious and it's delightful and even when you have no idea what the lyrics are about, you'll find yourself singing along anyway while tapping your feet. I grew up listening to this album. Now I'll grow old watching this DVD.
Movie Review: What DVD Was Made For Summary: 5 Stars
Okay, so you already know that Stop Making Sense is a great movie, or you probably wouldn't be here reading this. But if you are thinking of buying it on VHS, stop! If you don't have a DVD player, let go of the past and buy one so you can watch this the way it was meant to be watched! Too many DVDs don't utilize the vast amount of space availible in disk format. Stop Making Sense is not one of these inferior DVDs. You can watch the movie with band commentary, compare Byrne's original storyboard to the film, and see that delightful little gem David Byrne Interviews. . .David Byrne. Oh, that cracks me up. But I am about to let you in on a little secret about this DVD that you won't find in any other review. By far the greatest extra feature on this DVD is a trailer for another DVD, a cheap Jamaican film called Dancehall Queen. You can find it under the Special Features menu. Then go to Hyperactive, and then to DVD Trailers. If you can form any sort of narrative from this wacky trailer, I'll be a monkey's uncle. But it's great, I love it! So much better than boiled boot water! Just watch it.
Movie Review: STOP MAKING SENSE Summary: 5 Stars
I feel kinda stupid that I waited so long to get into Talking Heads. I have heard there music and pretty much liked and sometimes loved cuts, but I thought they were a gimicky studio band for some reason. I am 57 years old and I am into BLUES ROCK REGGAE SOUL FUNK JAZZ R&B ETC. THIS DVD is not just great music it one of the best movies I have ever seen. The production vaules are impecable the originally is second to none. If you are a music fan you will fall in love with this DVD. This dvd deserves it's own catagory. 5 stars does not do it justice.
