Movie Reviews of Stitch! The Movie

Movie Review: Yet Another Bad Sequel from Disney; See 'Lilo and Stitch 2' Instead
Summary: 2 Stars

They say all the major characters come back in `Stitch the Movie,' quickly made direct-to-video sequel to the hugely popular `Lilo and Stitch.' For me, the original film's most appealing part is, and will be, Lilo and Stitch, one of the most delightful characters Disney created in the last decade. Do we still need Pleakley when we have Stitch? How about Cobra? Or some alien whose name you have forgotten? Do we need them? No, I don't think so.

But `Stitch the Movie' crammed all these characters into this small film of which running time barely exceeds one hour, together with a weak story that repeats exactly what the original was doing. The original's idea of `Ohana' or `family' is changed to `cousin' this time, but for most of the viewers this is literally a twice-told story, no longer attractive enough.

What makes us feel short-changed is, however, the lack of music and scenery, the impressive parts of `Lilo and Stitch.' Instead of Elvis songs, they have thrown in parodies or homage to other films and TVs like Monty Python and Ed Wood, completely missing the target audiences who would buy this DVD to experience the joyful sound and rhythm of this great singer.

Moreover, the charming, water-color Hawaiian scenery is reduced to the generic, unimaginative backdrop which is barely OK even by the lower standard of the Disney's cheap sequels.

The only saving grace is the presence of the actors who provided the voices to the characters. Except that, and the funny but brief scenes about the lovely pair Lilo and Stitch, `Stitch the Movie' looks like a pilot film for the original. Or perhaps it is.

Movie Review: Not as good as the 1st, but my 3 yr old will still love it
Summary: 2 Stars

My 3 year old daughter has a bunch of dvds that she watches over and over again, and I'm sure that Stitch! The Movie will be one of them.

Once in a while I'll watch a dvd with my daughter and I certainly am still entertained each time I see the original Lilo & Stitch, Monsters Inc., Toy Story, Mulan, etc.

But I have to admit watching Stitch! The Movie one time was enough for me. The story just isn't that good and I just didn't care when I heard "nobody gets left behind or forgotten" in the sequel. I guess the writers were told to find a place in the movie to recycle some of the lines that came off as emotional and meaningful from the original. Maybe they should have concentrated on coming up with some new lines to be memorable for this film.

I like the way the french knights taunt the english ones in Monty Python and the Holy Grail, but when Dr. Hamster Wheel (the villain in this sequel) sounds just like one of the french knights, it just does not come off sounding funny.

There are a lot of good characters in this series, and the premise of the plot is not that bad. I guess they just needed better writers, editors or something to make it work.

If you are an adult without children and liked the original, I would suggest renting this one first, because you might not be entertained enough for the purchase price. But if you have kids and they liked the first one, go ahead and buy it because your kids will probably watch it over and over again.

Movie Review: Great for little kids, but not much for 9-above
Summary: 2 Stars

The first 'Lilo and Stitch' was great. It was funny, witty, and had state-of-the-art animation. Stitch the movie was different. Whereas 'Lilo and Stitch' had a 50's feel to it, when you watch Stitch!, it has a different feel. More like a kid's movie. 'Lilo and Stitch' was succesful because not only it was appealing to kids, but adults love it too because of the witty humor and the 'ohana' theme. 'Lilo and Stitch' was realistic, except for the alien part of course. In Stitch!, the "ohana" theme isn't much concentrated upon, except for annoying repeats of the phrase "ohana means family", which gets pretty tiring after a while.

And the ending is a big rip-off. The previews told us that we would meet the other 625 experiments, but instead we only met two, 221 and 625. It's obvious that it's a promo to watch the series. The series is great, and I feel you don't need to watch this movie to understand it. It's just another creation, and it's all about money, money, and guess what? Money.

Movie Review: disappointed
Summary: 2 Stars

While still enjoyable, this film lacked much of what made the original "Lilo and Stitch" movie enjoyable for adults as well as children.

The drawing was too simple and the film included very little music at all (especially compared to the first movie). Stitch's mischievious ways were almost totally reformed leaving Stitch more like a blue, six-legged, teddy bear. The sequel carried virtually none of the Hawaiin tradition from the first film. Also, the sequel paid very little attention to Lilo and her sister's family situation.

The sequel is an obvious rush job and an even more obvious segway (sp?) to the upcoming TV cartoon. It has a srong "Pokemon" feel to it ("Gotta catch em all") rather than the feel of the first "Lilo and "Stich" movie.

This movie could have been much better, however Disney chose to totally overkill the idea of Stitch's cousins and left out too much of the original characters' traits.

Movie Review: Does not live up to expectations
Summary: 2 Stars

The video store in my town by accident released this movie four days early to rent. I loved the first movie, Lilo and Stitch, and was expecting this to be just as good. But, it definately does not live up to the first one. It's cute, and the other 625 experiments are very cute, but it's really missing something. The first movie had Elvis' songs and songs especially recorded for the movie, that give it the Hawaiian feel. All of that is missing in this movie. I also didn't think this movie was as funny as the first, and in someways it doesn't really seem like it takes off right where the first one ended. Sadly, it doesn't live up to expectations.
