Movie Review: Not quite "Bring it On," but this film still sticks
Summary: 4 Stars

When "Bring it On," came out several years ago, everybody raved about its wit, its humour, and its over-the-topness that grilled it in as an instant teen-chic-flick classic. Now, with the release of this film, "Stick It," by the same writers, teenagers are again given the chance to truly laugh at and enjoy a decent teen movie.

Haley is a rebel, who any day would love to hang out at the jumps with her friends. But when an accident lands her in trouble with the law, instead of juvie she is forced to attend a prestigious national gymnastics academy. Turns out, she'd much rather take the juvie. You see Haley was once a competitive and brilliant gymnist, when a sudden issue drove her to bail, causing her entire team to lose the national finals. With a little convincing from her coach and her own competitive hunger to motivate her, Haley feels ready to settle the score with her teammates, the judges, and herself.

Both "Bring it On" and "Stick It" have several things in common. Firstly is their somewhat risque film titles, as "Bring it On," and "Stick It," have a particular sexual appeal, and are certainly aimed to attract teenagers. Secondly is their storylines focussing around cliquie competitive feminine sports, cheerleading and gymnastics. The beauty of these two films, is they are not meant to be taken seriously. The films even go as far as pay out these sports, and therefore the type of people who part-take in them. It's one of the charms of these films that I enjoy and commend the writers on. I'm not trying to compare "Bring it On" with "Stick It" too much, but I AM saying that if you liked "Bring it On," then this movie is a shoe-in for one that you will comfortably enjoy.

So now about the movie itself: "Stick It", firstly, offers a fresh new cast of young and amusing actresses as Haley's fellow gymnists. The bright dialogue they share always has you with a grin on your face. You can tell it's terribly unrealistic, but that's ok, because it's not supposed to be taken seriously anyway. The script pokes fun at several things, like the sport gymnastics itself and its competitive and physical demands, pushy "OC"-like, soccer moms, and even iPods. It's great to see a film that is about teenagers, for teenagers, that isn't affraid to expose the things that dominate and influence their world.

The other great aspect of this film is the gymnastic routines themselves. They are absolutely splendidly choreographed and filmed. As I mentioned before, "Stick It," is centered on paying out gymnastics, but then on the flip-side this film also honours the sport, through the truly beautiful cinematography of the routines. This aspect of the film really accentuates it and adds to its quality on the whole.

So the final score? Well, let me put it this way: it's not quite "Bring it On," but "Stick It," really is a good, fun movie that you can enjoy and laugh at. A pleasant script, colourful characters teamed with beautiful filming all add to the final product. No, it's not exactly Oscar-worthy, but I am quite sure "Stick It," will earn its place on the shelf of teen-chic-flick classics. Don't just "bring it", "Stick it!"

Movie Review: It's Not Called Gym-nice-stics...
Summary: 4 Stars

While yes, this is basically "Bring It On", only with gymnastics instead of cheerleading, it's still a fun film that gives a lot of insight into the harsh world of competitive gymnastics.

Girls can be catty, and girl gymnasts are no different. When you train most of your life for 8 hours a day or more, while having no social life and nothing to look forward to except some serious injuries and the hope of Olympic gold...things might get a little tense. This is a story of rebellion, and compromise -- of finding yourself, while still trying to find the fun in life. It's cheesy without being stupid, touching without being too heavy, and able to poke fun at itself without forgetting it's core message.

Quick Recap: Haley is a power-house gymnast with amazing natural ability...but she throws it all away at the World Championship when she walks out on her team just before her floor routine, and crushes USA's hopes of getting gold. 2 years later, a troubled Haley is forced back into the practice gym after a run-in with the law. Can she resolve her issues with the sport and compete once again? Or will she turn her back on herself and her teammates for a second time?

This film certainly tends to over-use montage scenes. Theres a montage for everything. A montage for practice sessions, a montage for training, a montage for in-house meets, a montage for competition, a montage for hanging out with friends...pretty much you can't go 10 minutes without seeing another montage. On the plus side, they have pretty cool music throughout the film, and it helps make the over-abundance of montages hip, fun, and tolerable.

The only recognizable gymnast in the film is a cameo role by Nastia Liukin, the current USA championship holder, and probable Olympic medalist (we'll keep our fingers crossed for her and team USA).

While the ending is a little contrived, and in no way realistic, it's still worth watching. Kick back, suspend your idea of reality in competitive gymnastics, and watch all the cool montage scenes you want!
