Movie Reviews of StellaMovie Review: Perfect Summary: 5 Stars
It took me forever to find this again. SO glad I found it. It came on time and looks great thanks.
Movie Review: Very good but... Summary: 3 Stars
Writing this review was something I wanted to do after I got done seeing "Stella" with Bette Midler (DVD rental). I didn't expect much because even though I like Bette she has never moved me as others have like Barbra Streisand but I was surprised how much I liked the movie. I think the acting was wonderful and everyone was good in his or her roles. Finding someone to play Bette Midler's daughter probably was not easy but the casting department hit a home run with Trini Alvarado.
This movie could have been better if it were treated more importantly. While watching the movie I kept thinking that with the right cinematography (more close ups of Bette, especially when she is trying to make her daughter believe that she doesn't want her anymore...she is at the sink in the kitchen and she has to turn around and let her have it...you could tell Stella was thinking "okay, here it goes, this better be good) and to dim the lights in the bar...too much light...didn't look realistic). A strong director and better editor could have polished this movie up to a high gloss shine.
Some of the story did not ring true and could have been more consistent...like Stella going down to Florida and dressing and acting outrageously, while during the rest of the film her appearance was not so extreme.
Sorry the DVD did not have extras...it also was not treated very importantly.
All in all very entertaining...thank you, Miss Bette, you are divine!
Movie Review: Stella Summary: 3 Stars
This movie was okay and although a little disjointed at times, it was worth watching. Bette Midler is always excellent value for money.
It had an absurd ending but Bette did well with a so so script.
Movie Review: A day late and a dollar short. Summary: 2 Stars
I am going to start out this review by stating a fact. After the 1937 version of STELLA DALLAS the film was never remade....until 1990. Why, exactly, Hollywood decided the cynical 90s was a good time to remake this classic is still a mystery over a decade later. Why Bette Midler was cast in the signature Barbara Stanwyck role at first seemed like an odd choice. Of all the great actresses that could have pulled off a remake, why Bette Midler and why in 1990? We may never know. Unfortunately, there is little reason to speculate because this neglible remake has not held up in the ensuing years. But then again, this film was sadly outdated even by 1950, much less 1990. What made STELLA DALLAS a great film is lost to this remake. Much of its appeal was to the 1930s housewife, longing to forget the Great Depression and the poverty many experienced. With the end of the self indulgent 1980s and the dawming of the politically correct 1990s, STELLA remains an odd bird. Its rather like watching your grandparents do a rap. It just doesn't "fit" the day and age in which it takes place. Even the most avid Bette Midler fan can't help but feel a little embarrased for her here. In fact, there seem to be times during the movie when Midler herself seems confused by the time warp her movie presents. For those who are curious about the ending, it is much more affective is you see the original STELLA DALLAS. Here is comes off entirely unbelievable...much like Trini Alvarado's impish acting style as Midler's sacrificed daughter. My suggestion? Skip this, unless you are looking for some kitsch and have some time to waste.
