Movie Reviews of Steely Dan - AjaMovie Review: Insider Look at Aja Summary: 5 Stars
After watching a few other classic rock album documentaries, I wasn't expecting much from this Aja documentary. It turned out to be a surprisingly good review of the recording of Aja. Firstly, it was mostly the Steely Dan musicians Fagen and Becker along with studio musicians that provided commentary on the album, unlike other album documentaries that have mainly outside commentary from music critics. Also, there's alot of footage of a reunion of sorts where they play the music. The bassist Chuck Rainey, who made a major contribution to the rhythmic feel of the album, plays some of his bass lines solo. Fagen and Becker also comment on the instrumentation and performance of Aja while seated at a studio control panel making adjustments to hear the music parts in isolation. This is the best classic rock documentary I've seen on DVD.
Movie Review: Classic Steely Dan Summary: 5 Stars
When it comes to unique, jazz-infused music, it doesn't get any better than Steely Dan. Aja and The Royal Scam are the two "must-have" Dan CD's, in my opinion, although everything they have done is worth owning. Their cool vibe is totally unique. And although you wouldn't say they are the greatest singers out there, they are definitely one of the greatest bands to jam on stage. There is just nobody else out there like Steely Dan. I'm not a jazz fan typically. I'm more into the classic rock scene; however, the first time I ever heard The Royal Scam album (my intro to Steely Dan), I was hooked. That was nearly 3 decades ago now. There is not a bad song on Aja. My favorite tune on this CD is Black Cow, and it sounds as good today as it did the first time I heard it. Will I ever tire of hearing Steely Dan? I think not!
Movie Review: An Education in the making Summary: 5 Stars
This is a marvellous DVD on the making of Steely Dans great album Aja. All of Walter Becker and Donald Fagans legendary perfectionism is on display.
Fortunately for us all the tapes of their sessions were saved, so we are able to hear some of the fabulous guitar solos they rejected for Peg; but then when you re-hear the original you understand why. There are interviews with many guest musicians: Jazz Tenor great Wayne Shorter.
Drummer Bernard Purdie who demonstrates his uniquely funky drumming style.
Michael McDonald talks about some the fiendishly difficult backing vocals he multi-tracked with himself.
This is an essential purchase for the Dan fan or for anybody generally interested in the music making process by two of the most fascinating musicians in the business.
Movie Review: EXCELLENT VID... Summary: 5 Stars
If you are into Steely Dan and want a GREAT descripton on how these HISTORICAL songs, this is the vid for you... Mr. Fagen and Mr. Becker are VERY smart and know how to make music. Alot of their ideas are lacking in music today and its good to see that there are TRUE music makers still around....
