Movie Reviews of Steely Dan - AjaMovie Review: "There walked Giants among us" Summary: 5 Stars
When it comes to Music, Steely Dan is with out a doubt among the giants.
If you are a fan, this is an amazing insight into the absolute GENUIS that went into this project. If you are not a fan, and have little musical exposure or knowledge, then there should be some kind of "briefing" so you understand where the video is coming from. Maybe some listening to their music will help & getting acquainted with their unique approach to composing and assembling "bands" as well. Other than the wise-d up fan, what would posses someone to buy this plainly labeled & obviously NON "entertainment" (The making of the album Aja) film?
The film is a Great piece of work!
Straight forward, tongue in cheek, relaxed and informative and it doesn't take itself too seriously.
If you are a musician, it's a set of CLUES on how to think outside the dialectic box when endeavoring to transfer your musically creative visions into any sort of tangible reality. I credit this documentary among other experiences in the past thirty years with the progress of my own various little musical projects currently.

This is a musical "New York Yankees" my friend. The video is a brief history of the band, as told by Wally & Donny as well as an admittedly spotty documentary about how the project was constructed. I also agree that it sadly overlooks mention of Steve Gadd, and others who really contributed to the title track..... Still, this is a "musicians debriefing" if you will. How AWESOME is it to sit there and listen to Wayne Shorter add to the story of how he came to be recruited for the project. His "Miles" (David) anecdote was charming. Seeing Chuck Rainey play Bass and Bernard Purdie rock the drums is amazing.
As others have said, "its a must for Steely Dan fans and musicians as well.

Summary of Steely Dan - AjaPioneering pop/jazz band Steely Dan, formed by Donald Fagen and Walter Becker in the early 70s, had already secured five U.S Top 40 albums before the release of Aja in 1977. Aja, however, was to prove to be the biggest selling album of Steely Dans illustrious career, reaching Number 3 in the U.S. Billboard chart, spending a year in the Top 40 there and also reaching number 5 in the U.K. Aja was the first British Top 10 hit for Steely Dan and was also the first album by Becker and Fagen as a duo. Becker and Fagen, renowned for their relentless perfectionism in the recording studio, recall the history of an album that was a year in the making, but rewarded by a prestigious Grammy Award® and three major hit singles, Peg, Deacon Blues and Josie. Michael McDonald, later of the Doobie Brothers, who did guest backing vocals on Aja, the late British musician Ian Dury, record producer Gary Katz, and the legendary session musicians who worked on Aja, also contribute to this fascinating documentary. Steely Dans Aja has proved to be one of the most outstanding jazz-rock albums in the history of popular music. This is a vivid portrait of a 70s record that is still as fresh and as memorable more than two decades after its release, a true Classic Album.
