Movie Reviews of Starter for 10Movie Review: I liked it! Summary: 5 Stars
The film is a story of a young man going off to university. It is a British film about a British University and a very British institution, Univesity Challenge- a tv quiz show. If you can get under the cultural skin if the film you may find a little gem. It has all the memories of that time, the sloughing off of old childhood friends who do not go to university, the discovery that our parents are people too and the hesitant pavane of romance with strangers.
As in all romance our hero meets two women, a drop dead gorgeous girl who is part of the quiz team and an aggressive and scared Jewish woman. We know who he will end up with, naturally, but the roller coaster trip to the final choice is a heady ride.
Movie Review: kooky, romantic comedy Summary: 5 Stars
James McAvoy has that affable quality which makes the viewer like him even when he is being a bit of a prat. That is true throughout this DVD. The storyline is a little "low key," as the adaptation of the book to the screen was not as effective as it could be, but the performances are strong, and the viewer will not feel "cheated" when he finishes watching the film.
Movie Review: A perfectly-tuned romantic comedy Summary: 5 Stars
This is one of the rare romantic comedies in which intelligence is what attracts people to each other. It also has one of the all-round best casts in a film since BRIGHT YOUNG THINGS and a lesser-known American comedy called THE BAXTER, both of which should have won whatever prize casting directors get.
Movie Review: Watch if for James Macevoy's eyes alone Summary: 5 Stars
I have a slight obsession with him, but the man can say more with the shift of his chin or tilt of his head than most popular actors. There were many cringe-worthy moments that brought back my own college years. What a pity that this was so overlooked here in the states.
Movie Review: Wonderful Summary: 5 Stars
I love this movie. It was funny, witty and warm. You can see that James McAvoy starting to grow an an actor. He's absolutely charming and exuberant.
