Movie Reviews of Starship Troopers

Movie Review: Good HD Telecine cut
Summary: 3 Stars

I was about to buy Blu-ray if there's any, but found out that it was not released yet so I just bought the newest DVD cut. Actually Sony had it HD telecine and the picure and sound quality is very impressive.

Whether or not I like Paul's movie making, this one has a lot of violence which I like.

Movie Review: mmmmm
Summary: 3 Stars

I bought a used copy and it did not come in the DVD case that they display on the Starship Troopers page. If I buy it again, I hope it comes in the cool case they show on the page.

Movie Review: Mocks the book on which it was based.
Summary: 2 Stars

This movie is the liberal reaction to the book. This can especially be seen in the short films that litter the story. It makes fun of Heinlein's "militarism" by turning him into a jingoistic straw-man, following the well worn Hollywood groove of hating the armed forces and pretending that war is a silly game played by overgrown 9 year old boys.

Here is a little Latin from Napoleon for you Hollywood:
Si vis bellum para pacum.

Movie Review: Hollywood trashes a classic story
Summary: 1 Stars

I normally don't bother with these reviews, but Jeff Shannon's primary review is so incredibly lost--and combined with Mike Gambit's line, "I'm amazed that so many people can blindly miss the subtleties of this movie." Well, that's just too much. Talk about clueless.

There is a novel, "Starship Troopers," written by Robert Heinlein in the 50's. It caused a firestorm because it envisioned a society where citizenship was conditioned on responsibility. Whether that provision would have made a better society can be debated, but that the concept evoked horror among the moneyed parasites and inveterate leeches was undeniable.

In the novel, Heinlein's society was tested in a war with an alien civilization. Johnny Rico was a rich kid who almost accidentally learns he lives in a society and that it takes effort and sometimes sacrifice to keep that society alive. It was a great story and remains, after forty years of devouring novels of all genres, one of my favorites.

The movie completely distorts the novel's theme, turning it around 180 degrees, losing plot, detail and characters until it's not even a reflection in a crazy-house mirror, becoming an utterly cheesy production. In the process, a great story remains untold, replaced by a mindless, insipid caricature of immensely entertaining and thought-provoking piece. Any shallow Hollywood drone could come up the "themes" buried in this movie, which is obviously what occurred. The producer, director and writer behind this travesty took a gem and turned it into pond scum--not even good, healthy pond scum, but the gray, slimy stuff that stinks and won't leave your memory.

Miss the point? Unbelievable. The only points in this production were on the tips of a number of heads.

Movie Review: I hate this movie, I really do
Summary: 1 Stars

Leaving aside the fact that it represents itself as a movie version of a classic sci-fi novel, this is quite possibly one of the worst movies ever to come out of Hollywood. It mixes human wave assaults against faceless enemies with poor story line and non existent character development. If you loved the book you'll hate this move. If you hated the book you still may hate this movie unless you're watching it to reaffirm your belief that all soldiers are knuckle dragging idiots that should be sequestered from society and disposed of, preferably by a giant cg monster.

One of the worst movies I've ever seen. It takes a thought provoking book and throws out everything but these things: The main character is named Johnny, the bad guys are called bugs, Johnny is in the Mobile Infantry.

I'm told that the Director was in the Dutch Marines and so I really expected better then Nazi human wave attacks in space. My guess is that either the Dutch Marines are less professional then my local boyscout troop or the Director has a very low opinion of the Military and the type of person who would willingly join.
