Movie Reviews of Starship Troopers

Movie Review: Good Movie
Summary: 4 Stars

I remember this when it first came out. You can't compare it to the book, but what movie can you!!! Good movie to watch if you just want the sci-fi action.

Movie Review: Has its moments, but doesn't really deserve the title
Summary: 3 Stars

Starship Troopers is a big budget action film set in a science-fiction based future where most of society is military based, and to be considered a citizen you must serve in the Terran Mobile Infantry. This is of course based on the classic sci-fi/military novel written by Robert A. Heinlein nearly fifty years ago, which was under the same name. The name is pretty much where the similarities between the movie and the book end.

The plot to this film adaptation of this sci-fi classic is not handled very respectfully, Director Paul Verhoeven's sense of satire coming across as being very out of place when I first saw the film. I was wondering if whoever owned the rights to the book knew what they were doing to the material, because I'm sure Heinlein would NOT have approved of the end result.

I've come to accept the satirical aspects of this film, but I don't understand why they'd mock the book, as opposed to making it into an actual movie. I get laughs out of this movie, the action is fun, though simplistic, but as an adaptation of the novel it fails on multiple levels. I put the novel down feeling it was one of the best books I'd ever read. When I left this film it felt like I did after every B-action film you see on an average basis; just nothing that left an impact on me like the book did.

Total Recall and RoboCop were both handled better in regards to mixing action, sci-fi, and satire. Starship Troopers tries hard to be those films, but ultimately fails. Even if it wasn't supposed to be an adaptation of that novel, it still doesn't have the charm of those previous Verhoeven films. They made us laugh at the depictions of society, as well as draw us in with engaging characters. You don't care about any of the characters here, because they're all cardboard cut-outs and clichés, not worth anyone's time. Out of all the movies disappointed me, this one is up there as one of my biggest let-downs.

I really have nothing much left to say, other than I was incredibly disappointed by Verhoeven, and the production team for not providing a better film.

6/10 stars

Movie Review: The best, bad movie I've ever seen
Summary: 3 Stars

Starship Troopers, a movie based off of a book, oh joy. Now I've never read the books myself, but from what I know about them the movie is very different, so if you're a crazy person how can't stand a movie deviating from the books, DO NOT WATCH THIS MOVIE. But for the rest of you who are looking for a decent action flick, you should enjoy it.
Basic Plot: A race of space aracnids the size of cars want to kill us so we try to kill them first. It's around (My guess since they never say) 200-300 years in the future, and follows a group of space marines as they blow the living crap out of said giant bugs.

The Good bits: The action in this movie is fantastic, although it is pretty gorey so be warned if you have a weak stomache. The CGI looks great some of the best I've seen out of a 90s movie, the bugs look like thay're actually there most of the time (Something I can't quite say for other giant bug movies) they actually look like and behave like bugs (Swarming tacktics and such). The plot is decent enough, but alot more could have been done with it.

The Bad Bits: The acting at some points is a little flat, there are some plot holes that don't really make sense, (Example, who did the scientists get live Aracnid Warriors into those facilities? Also around 70% of the main cast is from Buenos Aies, and have Hispanic names {Flores, Rico, Ibanez, ect} but none of the actors even affect an accent, but that might just be me nitpicking). Most of the humor is absolutly horrendious (In my opinion at least), and alot of what seemed to be some sort of political commentary seemed forced (Sorry I turned my brain off for this movie so I'm not sure).

Overall: a good action movie, not big in the story department, could've been a lot better then it was. I think it's a good movie with a lot of faults and wasted potential, it's a good time if you want a things nice and shooty, but not if you're looking for something to analize and challange your brain.

Movie Review: A pail reflection of the book
Summary: 3 Stars

In defense of our world, school kids from Argentina willingly join the military upon graduation, as military service is required for full citizenship. During their term they learn adapt to their new environment and grow together or apart as they take part in many battles against big bugs from outer space.

Yep it is another bug movie. In addition, the bugs are very big. Too bad for the people that read the book. There is no way to justify this movie to you. The first thing you may notice that that the body armor is missing.

This is sort of a stereotype on military types, with the grunts being boxy shaped faces and bodies to match, the elite having pointy accouterments. Moreover, the gung-ho get their brains sucked out. This looks like a pilot for a TV series. The all male associate soldiers from the book were replaced with female soldiers who improved the shower scenes.

If you just have to take the 'Fascist Utopia' thing seriously then watch a serious movie where there is still a character (Paul) sucked into the same situation by his teacher and others in "All Quiet on the Western Front" (1930).

Movie Review: Eh...
Summary: 3 Stars

Some book-to-movie adaptations are well-executed. I can't say this is one of them. I saw this movie a long time ago, and read Robert A. Heinlein's 'Starship Troopers' later, and the book is SO much better than the movie! The book discusses a lot of philosophy - child-rearing, patriotism, military attitudes, citizenship, war, etc. It really is an awesome book, and I highly recommend it to anyone.

The movie is lacking in the genius of the book. Bit of trivia - while in the movie Dizzy was a girl, in the book, Dizzy was actually a man, a minor character who died fairly early on in the book. The film is more about adventure and special effects, the story itself doesn't have much substance. Seriously, read the book.
