Movie Reviews of Starship TroopersMovie Review: Wonderful! A Non-stop Hack-Fest! Summary: 5 Stars
100 Snazzes on the 100 point Snazz-o-Scale!
Starship Troopers is a superb movie. The special effects are absolutely stunning and it's almost complete action from start to end.
There's a little social commentary, for the government in charge of earth is tolitarianism I think, with severe limits on freedom. One woman explains she joined the military because she wants a baby, and it's easier to get a license if you're a citizen. A bureaucrat compliments Our Hero for joining the infantry, saying it was the infantry that made him the man he is today - he has no legs.
But the main reason to watch the movie though is its huge fantastic battles, lots of wonderful blood and gore, strange alien bugs, a little bit more blood and gore, phenomenal special effects, some more blood and gore, a body count in the thousands if not the millions, and even more blood and gore. Did I mention the blood and gore? Starship Troopers has been compared favorably to "Saving Private Ryan" in its Hack-Factor, that is it's mind-numbing violence. The humans have machine guns, nukes, and plasma cannons. The bugs too have plasma cannons, a flame thrower that shoots out their noses, but mostly they have sharp pincers. While a human must blow multiple parts off a bug to kill it, splattering everything with orange or green guts and goo, the bug will stab humans through the chest, lop off heads, bite off legs and rip bodies in two. Wowee, what fun!
Huge starships explode, crash into each other, or are torn in two by great plasma bolts, sending corpses tumbling into deep space. A guy gets his brains sucked out. A woman gets her arm burned off, two soldiers are reduced to flames, a soldier gets his brains blown out. Unparalleled violence and mayhem and all good clean fun.
Watch it!
Movie Review: Cheney's Favorite Movie. Summary: 5 Stars
I saw this film in a theater back when it came out in '97 and saw it as being a clever and thought-provoking satire/social commentary. I recently watched it again and found `Starship Troopers' to be so chillingly prescient that I cannot get it out of my mind. While it functions (well, I might add) on a superficial level as an exciting action/scifi romp, this movie leaves you with plenty to think over.
The basic premise is that after being `attacked' by a so-called an inferior civilization, all governmental functions, media, information, and public life on Earth become subordinate to the military. Of course, an early bit of dialogue suggests that those in power assumed their authority in some kind of coup prior to the alien war. Moreover, the film frames the alleged attack so that a reasonable person would rightly question who the real aggressor is. Finally, the film suggests that Earth's treatment of enemy prisoners amounts to behavior that Americans once would have labeled torture.
If we aren't currently living in a government that is deliberately patterning itself after `Starship Troopers', then we might as well be. The fact that this film came out 4 years before the false flag operation of September 2001 amazes me beyond words. I would recommend this film be mandatory viewing for every high school and undergrad student in the U.S. before too many of our younger generation forgets what life was like before the bloodless coup of 2000.
Movie Review: Like a WW2 epic...with bugs Summary: 5 Stars
After graduating from high school, Johnny Rico (Casper Van Dien) follows his girlfriend, Carmen (Denise Richards), and best friend, Carl (Neil Patrick Harris), to enlist in the military, but when war is declared between humans and a race of highly-evolved giant bugs, Rico proves that he is a hero in his own right.
"Starship Troopers" can be best described as an over-the-top, unbelievably trashy remake of every World War II epic ever made...but with bugs instead of Nazis as the villains. Based of the comments that I have heard from critics and my friends, in the decade since this film was released, this is the sort of film that you will either love or hate, although I, personally, cannot imagine how anyone could not like this film. If you love really trashy B-grade horror movies, then you will adore this film. It is essentially a B-grade movie made on an A-grade budget. This film contains gratuitous violence, sex and nudity; disturbingly large quantities of bug blood; and Denise Richards. How could that not appeal? The script is a lot smarter than you would imagine, essentially it is a satire of war propaganda films, complete with newsreels and more scenes of bravery than I've seen since John Wayne's death. It is also directed by Paul Verhoeven, the man who gave the world "Basic Instinct", who impressed me so much with this film that I am now half tempted to watch the infamous "Showgirls".
Movie Review: Irony lost Summary: 5 Stars
Robert Heinlein's "Starship Troopers" as done by some who had no respect for Heinlein's values. Despite the conflict in values, I enjoyed it immensely. Of course, given that the irony was so subtle that I, as many, missed it...
A lot of liberties were taken with Heinlein's work, but if one is ignorant of Verhoeven's intent, the spirit appears to be preserved, with an emphasis on a political system based on personal responsibility and accountability, and the premise that a thing worth having must be earned. Clearly these values are without any relation to needs of members of modern western society. So, Verhoeven attempted delicate and subtle irony to show his contempt for these obsolete concepts. Due to his monumental failure, he swore off irony.
The action and effects are lively, the characters well developed and complex, as are the relationships, and the story is a passable tribute to one of the greatest books ever.
The moral of this; don't mess with Heinlein, pacificts shouldn't make war movies, and irony is as controlable as a woman.

Movie Review: Great Movie Summary: 5 Stars
On the surface this is a sci-fi action movie with awesome special effects. Below the surface, it's a great piece of social commentary. A gory inter-galactic war movie pitting humans against a race of advanced insects, this film focuses on the idealistic aspects of youth and the role of gung-ho attitudes and propaganda in military recruiting. As well as themes of social responsibility, sexual equality and high school relationships. Sound like a head rtrip? It is!
Ultra-violent, funny and well acted (for the most part), you must see this film are a critically thinking adult who doesnt mind gross-out humor. As an added bonus, you get to watch Gary Bussey's (sp?)son, Jake Bussey who looks and acts much like his dad!
As adolescent as it is in parts, it is absolutely not for kids!
The DVD looks great, but this version is light on the special features. There are a blue-million DVD versions of this out there though (I was replacing an old full-screen version I had with all the special feature documentaries).
If youve never seen this before, you must.
