Movie Review: Starship Troopers-For Patriots and Citizens Only
Summary: 5 Stars
Besides the fact that the title of my review has nothing whatsoever to do with my opinion of this film I thought Starship Troopers was an outstanding sci-fi movie which obviously and (I believe) intentionally oversimplifies the position it appears to take on the value of being a "true soldier".
Nobody should read too much into the politics and just enjoy the great action, outstanding special effects and competent acting. I rate this movie at 5+ stars and hope to see the likes of it again. The scale and scope of the large screen CGI effects for huge fleets of starships looked absolutely authentic and would make any pacifist proud to witness the display of military power (at least for the duration of this film).
I recent watched this film on my large screen HDTV for the first time. I was amazed by the color, clarity, sharpness, and good general definition. All of the great effects and action were transferred to DVD beautifully regardless of how staged (i.e., computer generated or live action). What a geat DVD transfer. I can only imagine what this film would be like in Blue Ray.
I really didn't know at the time I saw the movie anything about its origins and thought the political background was a simple construct assembled for the sake of the movie. It was so simply stated that I trust most viewers didn't take it too seriously. I don't know what the writers may have believed, but as far as the film was concerned it came on as a science fiction movie from start to finish.
I also felt that the CGI images were enormously original on a scope which has been achieved only by a few sci-fi movies. In addition, the basic design and computer effects for the warrior bugs were absolutely outstanding and for my money were only surpassed by Giger's vision for the Alion.
Summary of Starship Troopers
Starship Troopers charts the lives of elite members of the Mobile Infantry, a corps of dedicated young men and women soldiers fighting side-by-side in the ultimate intergalactic war... the battle to save humankind. The enemy is mysterious and incredibly powerful with only one mission: survival of their species no matter what the human cost.In the first and finest RoboCop movie, director Paul Verhoeven combined near-future science fiction with a keen sense of social satire--not to mention enough high-velocity violence to satisfy even the most voracious bloodlust. In Starship Troopers, Verhoeven and RoboCop cowriter Ed Neumeier take inspired cues from Robert Heinlein's classic sci-fi novel to create a special-effects extravaganza that functions on multiple levels of entertainment. The film might be called "Melrose Place in Space," with its youthful cast of handsome guys and gorgeous women who look like they've been recruited (and in some cases they were) from the cast of Beverly Hills 90210. Viewers might focus on the incredible, graphically intense action sequences (definitely not for children) in which heavily armed forces from Earth go to off-world battle against vast hordes of alien "bugs" bent on planetary conquest. The attacking bugs are marvels of state-of-the-art special-effects technology, and the space battles are nothing short of spectacular. But Starship Troopers is more than a showcase for high-tech hardware and gigantic, flesh-ripping insects. Recalling his childhood in Holland during the Nazi occupation, Verhoeven turns this epic adventure into a scathingly funny satire of fascist propaganda, emphasizing Heinlein's underlying warning against the hazards of military conformity and the sickening realities of war. It's an action-packed joy ride if that's all you're looking for, but Verhoeven has a provocative agenda that makes Starship Troopers as smart as it is exciting. --Jeff Shannon
