Movie Reviews of Stargate SG-1 - Season 10

Movie Review: Unendingly cool
Summary: 5 Stars

To begin with...season nine of `Stargate: Sg-1' really restored my faith in this series after what felt to me like some below-par seasons. I was never what you'd call a huge fan of this series, but that penultimate season with the introduction of new God-wannabe's and general galaxy troublemakers the Ori really did prove to me the huge talents at work behind the scenes of this fantastically gripping and intelligent sci-fi series. I hoped and willed the tenth and final season to be as impressive, but even though it isn't quite as intense and consistent, it's still a worthy conclusion to a hugely successful TV series.

Largely thanks to Vala (Claudia Black) who's as charming as she is side-splittingly, ingeniously, flirtatiously funny and who now becomes a credited member of the main cast, season ten gets off to a brilliant start (much better than season nine in fact) as the action picks up right where the previous season left-off with episode 1- `Flesh and Blood' (9/10) and doesn't decrease in pace for the next four episodes on the first disc, which continue to explore the continued threat of the Ori and their ever-increasing capture and control of worlds unable to mount any effective resistance against such a seemingly omnipotent foe. Episode 3- `The Pegasus Project' (9/10) is also very gripping with a finale that's both surprising and tantalising. The familiar stand-alone episodes then take over until episodes 10- `The Quest, Part I' (8/10) and 11- `The Quest, Part II' (9/10) both of which work well in continuing SG-1's discovery & unravelling of Arthurian-inspired mysteries surrounding their search for a weapon capable of destroying their enemy. Episode 14- `The Shroud' (8/10) sees Daniel in a unique position to deal a crippling blow to the Ori, which is also solid.

There were a couple of things that disappointed me about this season however- the first was that there were a few too many stand-alone stories (episode-16 `Bad Guys' (6/10) being the prime example) that didn't contribute to the season's main story-arc. It just felt to me too late in the game to be visiting planets for the first time that weren't under control of, or had never even heard of super-villains the Ori. Secondly, the resistance mounted by the Jaffa and other factions in the galaxy (e.g. the Lucien Alliance) that chose not to join with Earth don't contrast well against the continued efforts of the SG-1 team. In past seasons the story arcs involving the Jaffa in particular (but also the Asgard and Tok'ra) have been just as well-developed and gripping as the story arcs following SG-1, but unfortunately only a couple of episodes concentrate on the Jaffa in this final season. Lastly, while episode 20- `Unending' (10/10) is undoubtedly a wonderful episode- with a story that's not just dramatic, but explores sides to the main characters never seen before, it ends the season with so much unresolved that it's difficult to appreciate this tenth season as it should be appreciated as the final outing of SG-1. Obviously a great deal has been held back to be used in the TV movie `The Arc of Truth', which I am very much looking forward to and which will hopefully be released on DVD sometime next year, so I can't really complain!

An incredibly classy end to a show that has always provided unending enjoyment for viewers everywhere. My thanks to the cast & crew.

Movie Review: The End of an Era
Summary: 5 Stars

I remember the original Stargate SG-1 movie and while it was good, I think Richard Dean Anderson and Daniel Shanks made a better team than Kurt Russell and James Spader. Stargate offered an exciting journey to distant lands in a blink of an eye and the journey was usually quick, saving more time for adventure.

But after season 8, Stargate got too familiar, always fighting the Gu'ald. The addition of Ben Browder and Claudia Black seemed too reminiscent of Farscape. But the addition of the Ori as a new formidable opponent made the series sizzle again!

Season 10 continues Stargate SG-1's battle against the Ori, one of the most powerful enemies ever concocted. The search for Merlin's weapon against the Ancients that would also destroy the Ori leads one on a quest where even the Gu'ald team up with the SG-1 team to help defeat the Ori. The Ori can transform humans into their oracles and spokesmen and it is interesting to see Daniel Jackson as an Ori. But buy the DVD and see what happens next!

Stargate SG-1 may not be the cleverest series, but it offered quality entertainment to the family for 10 years. I doubt if StarWars could continue as good a series for 10 years. Even though the 100th and 200th episodes were campy and goofy, the 200th episode did have references to Farscape and a tongue-in-cheek view of the show. Stargate offered a look inside each character and although we hoped something would happen between Jack O'Neal and Samantha Carter, it was nice to see Daniel Jackson and Vala as a couple. The show's ending was bittersweet but it's nice to know that there will be movies following.

The series finale did not go out in a bang, or a whimper. It was tastefully done and unexpected. There was a LOT of loose ends and I hope the movies will resolve these. I will get Season 10 to finalize my box set collection. You should too because it will become a SciFi classic!

Movie Review: The right time to end a fantastic show
Summary: 5 Stars

As much as I would love SG-1 to go on forever, I know that ending at the landmark tenth season is the right thing to do in order to make sure such a wonderful series goes out with the dignity and respect that it deserves. SG-1 broke the mold in terms of special effects, production values, and sheer entertainment. It was able to look at the sci-fi genre in a different light, much like Farscape was able to do. It could make fun of itself while retaining its integrity, and it wasn't so dark and self-righteous as shows like Battlestar Galactica that it couldn't have a goofy episode here and there.

With the promise of at least two movies and the open door for more, the tenth season ends quietly and perfectly. Looking back, I realize that after O'Neill left, it just wasn't the same show. It was a lot of new characters, a new enemy, and a completely different angle. And while this did a lot to freshen up the storylines, it just wouldn't have held past two seasons of Mitchell leading the team. What was wonderful about the tenth season was Vala. She was a truly unapologetic character with a great storyline, and even though her bombastic character had the potential to be a scene-stealer, the amazing Claudia Black knows how to give as much as she takes. Her relations with each member of SG-1 and General Landry are incredibly entertaining and brought season 10 up to a whole new level.

Overall, the stories remained entertaining and meaningful, and the wonderful characters that we've know for ten years remained true to themselves while the newer characters remained true to the Stargate universe. Season ten feels like a good time to wave goodbye to an old friend without ever regretting a single moment of it.

Movie Review: STARGATE-SG1
Summary: 5 Stars

How can anywone deny the greatness of this series from the beginning to it's end.. Yes i know i sound like too much of a fan, however to a lot of guys out their like me it was memorable series one in which i spent every single year of it's existence looking forward to the next episode true they did a lot of parody's of themselves and quite frankly parts of the series did at times seem to languish in it's own greatnes... I know, I know it sounds too much of a ringing endorsement of this series, but truth be told the series was pretty consistent and most of it's theories seemed to be based on plausible theories... Well for the most part, it did everything one could imagine for a series it had a great beginning, well put together center and by that i mean the middle years of the entire series. To which it develloped all the possible characters of that particular universe...Also it had the sort of ending fitting that of a great series... Leading one to want more... Unlike another famous series that ended, well horribly to say the least... Hmm let me think which one could that be that ended horribly during that period...

P.S.. A mark of a truely great series is to be able to generate a spin off series while the main series is still on going.....

I can honestly say i was completely satisfied, I just wanted more...and by that i meant another season, I really wanted to see the entire thing resolved or something from the other sides perspective.... Sort of like what if they actually won and by that i mean the ORI.

Movie Review: Stargate SG-1 Season 10: good work but not the best
Summary: 5 Stars

(Be warn there are some references to what happens in a couple of episodes.)
The final season of Stargate SG-1 was a good season though I did feel a little let down in the way that the season was done. The final episode of the season was emotional and gave that feeling of what is like to end such a great long running series that is until the upcoming movie in 2008 but I feel like it only added nothing and took out one of the greatest group of characters in the series. Yet I had also had to wonder what was the point of the sixth episode other than to make references to other science fiction shows and make a reference to the long running time of Stargate SG-1. I admit that I was laughing but in the overall story I saw no point of it other than to say that we can do it because this is the last season.
I admit that the reason I bought the tenth season of Stargate to have the entire series though I feel like I could have waited to get the movie to possibly see the final demise of the Ori and its followers which I was expecting to see in the tenth season. Yet the season still has plenty of action and it does answer some questions about the Ancients and Merlin.
If a person could possibly wait I would recommend that a person wait until the price of the season comes down a little more before spending their money of wait until they can buy the season with the upcoming movie in 2008.
