Movie Reviews of Star!Movie Review: A Star Shines in the Universe Summary: 4 Stars
"Star" is a film that takes the viewer on a trip down "memory lane" with a flawless performance by
Julie Andrews and cutting edge direction by Robert
Wise. The story which touches on the literary and artistic world of the 20th century brings to the
screen Noel Coward, (which we wanted to see more of)
and Alexander Woollcott, and his colleaques at the
Algonquian Round Table who brought to the screen a sense of De ja vu that personified the spirit of the times.
Ms. Andrews interpretation of Gertrude Lawrence was
the delieghtful highlight of the film and the direction
by Mr. Wise added the drama that kept this film moving
with anticipation despite its almost 3 hour length.
The disk of this DVD is playable on both sides which offers an especially interesting collection of "Special Features" which creates the "topping on the cake" with interviews by Mr. Wise and Ms. Andrews and the 25th
Anniversary feature that gives the viewer an additional
perspective on the lives of the real life stars.

Movie Review: GOOD, but... eh Summary: 4 Stars
Wow what a film.... But as a biography is falls short on information about Gertie. However; as a Julie Andrews-extravaganza it is pure GOLD! Her timing and talent is beyond Poppins, Maria Von Trapp and Victor/Victoria:-))))
7/10/2005: When it comes to her PERFORMANCE as an ACTRESS, Miss Andrews is full of the Andrews cliches... the high pitch voice and talking much too fast... Examples are the tennis-scene with Pamela in which she does a horrible overacting as she falls to the ground. Yes she leans to the over-familar Andrews-mannerisms much too often....She is a comic and over the years has proved time and time again that she is out of her league when attempting dramatic turns....
A classic it ain`t, but some sequences do compell, but compared to the Limehouse Blues-number in ZIEGFELD FOLLIES and the 1 in STAR, you will sadly realise - that MGM it is not.....
But "Burlington Bertie", "Jenny" and "The Physician" stick to my mind as Andrews at her best as entertainer.
Movie Review: A smart, intelligent picture Summary: 4 Stars
This is a terrific DVD of an unfairly maligned and underrated picture. However, as good as it is, I can see why it was not commerically successful upon it's inital roadshow engagements in 1968. In many ways, it was just too good to be popular.Despite its many musical numbers, Star is not a musical in the traditional sense (think Helen Morgan in Applause and Judy Garland in A Star is Born). Also: British music hall variety doesn't cross the Atlantic well and I suspect that may have been a factor limiting its appeal in North America. The flip-side of this disk provides extensive and fascinating details of the production itself, including the desperate attempts by 20th Century Fox to recut, repackage and reposition the film to find a larger audience: it didn't work. Nonetheless, Star is a substantial accomplishment and Julie Andrew's demonstrates once again what a remarkably gifted and talented performer she is...just like Gertrude Lawrence!
Movie Review: Almost perfect Summary: 4 Stars
I once had a 16mm print of THOSE WERE THE HAPPY DAYS which is an edited version. I had bought the DVD as soon as it came out, but am just now doing the review. It is long and that is a draw-back for many. The production numbers are great. Robert Wise is a great director for Julie Andrews and Daniel Massey as Noel Coward is great [you will see a young Raymond Massey as you look at this]. The film ends as Gertrude marries Richard Aldrich. I would have preferred it to go to THE KING AND I with Yule Brenner; that is the time of her death and it would have completed her story. If you did some trimming on production numbers [not LADY IN THE DARK]I think you could have added the last little bit of her life and career and still kept it to just under 3 hours. The lac of completion is whh I give it four, not five stars. If you like Julie or you like musicals GET IT; the cost is less than a movie ticket and popcorn.
Movie Review: An almost great DVD - but not quite! Summary: 4 Stars
This film is a joy from start to finish! CLASSY is the perfect word! But the people at Fox could have done a little more to bring the same class to their DVD. Sadly, they forgot to include the Intermission break and Entr'acte Music available on the (for its time) superb LaserDisc release. And considering the improvements in "clean-up" possibilities over the last couple of years, Fox could have removed some of the dirt marks and scratches visible here and there. Also, grain and color balance are far from perfect. Apparently Fox decided to transfer the LaserDisc master to DVD without any further touch up jobs. A little depressing, I must confess! And how I miss that music in the middle of the film! Now, how about "Can-Can" and "State Fair" (1962) on DVD? Mastered from first class prints, of course! And 100% COMPLETE, thanks!
