Movie Reviews of Star Trek The Original Series - The Complete First Season

Movie Review: Superb presentation of this much loved, ground-breaking series
Summary: 4 Stars

The first season of this much-loved, ground-breaking series is superbly presented in this eight disk box set. The transfers onto DVD are excellent and one could hardly imagine how this could be better presented.

The 29 episodes range from average ("Shore Leave", "Miri") to great ("The Devil in the Dark", "Balance of Terror", "The City on the Edge of Forever"). Many of the episodes are commentary on the concerns of our own times and on the human condition generally, which is one of the reasons why they still resonate with us today while just about all other TV series are mere time capsules.

Much of the appeal of Star Trek lies in the well defined lead characters of Captain Kirk and Spock. Their interplay is a highlight of the series and so, to a lesser degree, is the playful sniping between Spock and Dr McCoy - and one can only admire the absolute commitment that all the actors bring to their roles.

There are so many nice touches such as the use of sound, music, and costumes, and often imaginative direction, which overcome the primitive visual effects and low-budget sets. This series is still well-worth watching - especially for fans - over forty years since it first aired.

Movie Review: Timing is everything
Summary: 1 Stars

26 March 2008. Amazon raises the price of this set from $38 to $60, despite the new-and-improved set that is now available. Sit back and watch the sales figures for this one drop off the chart. I'll wait for the price to come back down.

28 March 2008. Price still $60. This set has dropped to 14th place among 60's sets. The new HD set (at $97) with the re-mastered SFX is now up to 17th place.

29 March 2008. The HD set has risen to 16th place while this one, still at $60, has plunged to 26th. As sales tank, will Amazon lower the price again? Stay tuned.

31 March 2008. The price is now $35.49!!!!! The free market is a beautiful thing! Buy it now before they change their mind again.

1 April 2008. These original series season sets now occupy the top three spots in 60's TV sales. (I bought one!) Amazon makes the right choice. No foolin'!

30 April 2008. Back to $60. All good things, as they say. I hope you were able to buy your copy before this.

5 May 2008. Now back down to $38. Most illogical.

12 May 2008. Belay that order! Price now scanning at $55. Clearly we are experiencing an erratic phenomenon.

18 May 2008. Back to $60. Patience.

21 May 2008. Now at $55 again. This thing bounces around faster than the stock market. Stay tuned.

9 June 2008. Object now scans at $35.49. Your patience has been rewarded.

16 June 2008. Here we go again, back up to $55. What was that, a Father's Day sale or something? In these inflationary times, I don't see how Amazon expects to increase their sales by raising prices. I have a hunch that free shipping is an endangered species. Wait and see!

27 June 2008. Still at $55, and as of this date ranked 59th in 1960's TV series, just behind the second season of The Munsters at 58. Sad.

7 July 2008. I see we're at $48 now. A bit better, but only as the first set in a series. Seasons 2 and 3 are still $55.

15 July 2008. Whoops! Too late. Back to $55.

25 August 2008. After stabilizing at $55 for more than a month, the price has been reduced to $41.49. If you've been waiting, it's probably time to buy. 42 is the answer. This window may not stay open for long.

1 September 2008. And we're back to $55. See? I told you.

Movie Review: Star Trek Complete first season
Summary: 5 Stars

I only ordered the first season to see if I liked it. It's great fun and many of the stories are very original thought provoking. I'm going to order the remaining two seasons today. Highly recommended.

Movie Review: Classic TV at its finest
Summary: 5 Stars

The original "Star Trek". Yum. Good science fiction and good, campy fun. These episodes from the first season have the added bonus of being just a little more wobbly and unsure of themselves than the next two years, where the show's rhythm had been found. The performances are both less assured and a little more serious (the "Trek" crew dove heavily into the inside humor in the later episodes) but the entertainment value remains unparalleled after all these decades. I picked these up just to have a failsafe entertainment option on nights when regular TV falls flat... and boy, are they great! The show is even funnier and more delicious than I remembered from when I was a kid... Great stuff; highly recommended!

(PS - but why are the episodes presented out of order? Seems rather odd...) (Joe Sixpack, Slipcue movie reviews)

Movie Review: I love this collection...
Summary: 5 Stars

I love this series collection. The playback has been clean as well as the audio. I've been eagerly anticipating its arrival and am not disappointed.
