The original Star Trek, despite the notoriously cheesy sets and hammy acting by William Shatner, is a true classic SF series not just for the obvious reasons (becoming part of our pop culture heritage, spawning a huge TV and film franchise, etc.). It's classic because it was always boldly trying new things, with real SF writers like Harlan Ellison taking it where other shows hadn't gone before. You never knew what would come with each new episode. Some episodes fell flat, naturally, but many became genre classics that really stick with you for years. After the original series, Star Trek took a horribly wrong turn with the later series, beginning a long slide into mediocrity and irrelevance, while upstart shows like Babylon 5 totally eclipsed the Trek franchise where smart, cutting-edge SF was concerned. The whole Trek franchise became oppressively formulaic and derivative of itself, focusing on fleshing out the "Star Trek universe" instead of on character and story. Who on earth cares about tachyons and warp cores or how fast a Borg cube is? It's all trivia instead of substance. If you only know Trek from Enterprise, Deep Space 9, The Next Generation, or--God forbid--the pathetic Voyager, check out the original series to see Trek when it was groundbreaking and great.
