Movie Reviews of Standing In The Shadows of MotownMovie Review: Not in the Shadows any longer Summary: 5 StarsThis is the definitive DVD to find out about the roots of the Motown sound, It is truely remarkable when you watch this DVD and begin to realize the volume of hit songs that these guys produced-UNBELIEVABLE! The Funk Brothers were the shapers of modern music and this DVD tells their story; - Consumate music makers all!! The documentary story is fabulous; sometimes funny and sometimes sad, and the reunion concert scenes are a musical feast. Prior to seeing this movie I didn't claim to be a Joan Osborne fan but in the concert scenes she absolutely positively rips it, sticks it, nails it, and knocks you out on both "Heatwave" and "What Becomes of the Broken Hearted". Osborne's performance alone is reason to buy this recording and have it shipped "Next Day Delivery"- Really!!! It is true justice that the Funk Brothers get their overdue recognition and people realize that Berry Gordy was only the "Founder" (record mogul) of Motown. The Funk Brothers created the "Motown sound" and to them we owe sincere gratitude. This is a MUST DVD for all concert/music DVD collections. Guaranteed to be watched many times and played for large groups of music loving friends. Kudos to Allen Slutsky for getting this story out and honoring the Funk Brothers! (Joan Osborne - will you marry me?)
Movie Review: Get Your Refreshments BEFORE You Start the Movie! Summary: 5 StarsThis is an exciting and historical account of probably the most amazing group of musicians of modern times! Once it starts, you're riveted to your seat in amazement! Through this DVD you not only meet the phenomenal "FUNK BROTHERS", the musical geniuses behind the "Motown Sound" and learn to recognized their individual "signatures" but you will also hear the actual process/technique of how that sound was created. It is as exciting and entertaining as it is informative. Your status as a true Motown fan cannot be authenticated until you've experience this movie. It was long overdue, but I am so glad it's now here!
Movie Review: I now refer to anything Motown as the Funk Brothers Summary: 5 StarsIt is one of the great American tragedies that The Funk Brothers is not a house hold name. These musicians are among the Gods of modern music and we all owe them a great debt of gratitude. Put simply without the Funk Brothers there would be no Motown. Name a Motown hit and they made the sound. What's Going On, Papa Was a Rollingstone and My Girl are among my favorite songs of all time and they had everything to do with the music not so much the vocals. This DVD is a must for any library and I encourage you to purchase the deluxe soundtrack which is worth every penny.
PS: F@&* Motown, F(#@ the RIAA and F%$^ everyone that could have given The Funk Brothers their due glory and didn't.
Movie Review: i just didn't know Summary: 5 StarsI had know idea that these guys were the real sound of Motown. This is an incredible movie one which any music lover needs to see. It doesn't matter what type of music you like this is a must see. The Funk Brothers story must get out. They were "the men". These men had real talent, soul, and passion. This is a recommend/
Movie Review: Best documentary I've ever seen Summary: 5 StarsSomething about this director, he has the ability to transcend all other documentarians, even Martin Scorsese, and I'm not even sure how he does it. Marvelously entertaining film. Could watch it over and ovcer again.
