Movie Reviews of Standing In The Shadows of MotownMovie Review: unsung heroes get their due Summary: 5 Stars Everyone knows what Motown music is, but almost no one knows the Funk Brothers. They were the behind the scenes studio band of that powerful music movement, and played on more number one hits than the Beatles, Rolling Stones or Elvis Presley combined. This documentary tells their story and ends with a reunion concert of the aging veterans in Detroit.
Movie Review: Who knew??? Summary: 5 StarsEveryone should watch this dvd. It is very well done, and exposes the true artists behind the Motown hits - the studio musicians. Who knew??? Not me, until I watched this great dvd!
Movie Review: Motown: A Lasting Legacy Summary: 5 StarsSuperlatives aren't enough to describe this exceptional DVD. I'm a native Detroiter and grew up during the height of the Motown hits decade (the 60's). This DVD is such an overdue tribute to these terrific musicians who, unfortunately, didn't get the respect they deserved at the time, and now, many of them have passed. Watch this and you'll find yourself laughing, crying, but most of all, feeling jealous that you weren't at the Keyboard Lounge for the Big Reunion! The beats are unmistakeable; it'll make you want to get up and dance -- then break out your old Motown albumns. The Funk Brothers make me proud to be from the Motor City!
Movie Review: Awe Inspiring Summary: 5 StarsI love this movie, I love this soundtrack, I love this book -- I love the Motown sound. I'm in my early 30s, but my parents made sure I grew up with the proper respect for such phenomenal music. Shoot, there are days when I only listen to the Motor City music.
When I watched this documentary I was enamored with the concept that it was the music --not the singers-- that made Motown what it was. And it's the correct conclusion. Watching Joan Osborne, Ben Harper, Meshell Ndgeocello and the late great Gerald Levert perform these classics is amazing. Shoot, after watching it the first time I just went ahead and hooked up my stereo to the tv so I could really watch it.
I can't recommend this DVD enough. The only thing that was a disappointment is that the music extras weren't the full performances that are on the soundtrack -- but that's just me being selfish.
Buy this, sit down with a group of friends and enjoy.....or, even better, buy this sit down with your children and teach them what music sounded like before talent was just an option.
