Movie Reviews of Standing In The Shadows of Motown

Movie Review: Astounding piece of history
Summary: 5 Stars

I received this double CD set two days ago and I just read that the drummer passed away on Friday as well. That was sad. I previously bought "Standing in the Shadows of Motown" on DVD and it was simply astounding. I read all the reviews and decided on this set of CD's. The recordings are crisp, clear and could not be improved upon. Would I buy it again? Absolutely...it's one of the best CD sets I have ever purchased. I highly recommend it to anyone who loves the Motown sound. I only wish I could have seen them in person...with Joan Osborne...who is mindblowing on "What becomes of the Brokenhearted". It is my favorite on the DVD and the guys in the band love her..that's pretty apparent.

Movie Review: Strong Motown Rockumentary
Summary: 5 Stars

Every now and again, someone makes a rockumentary the right way and "Standing in the Shadows of Motown" is one of the best examples of how to do it. In general, Motown's music has never been taken seriously enough by critics - probably because this is some of the happiest music ever recorded and it's a lot easier to critically appraise doom-and-gloom than joy. More specifically, the Funk Brothers are one of the least-told tales of Motown history. Simply put, these men ROCK and need to be seen to be believed.

Until I saw this movie, I had no idea that Motown relied on a stable house band to crank out the many backing tracks for the Supremes, Temptations, Miracles, etc. I assumed that Motown used a revolving cast of session musicians. The Funk Brothers remained anonymous during Motown's heyday because - just like virtually all sessionmen - they were never credited on albums. I was amazed to see not only how tightly knit this house band was, but also how tiny Motown studios actually was.

Almost all of this movie consists of a "reunion" concert in which several headliners take turns recreating Motown hits with the Funk Brothers acting as the backup band. It's a treat to see these songs played with passion instead of being treated as limp oldies and it's pure joy to hear Bootsy Collins and Ben Harper sing material that isn't their own - and make it work.

None of the surviving Funk Brothers seem to have a nasty bone in their bodies, so there are no confrontations of the kind you would see in Chuck Berry's "Hail Hail Rock and Roll." They seem to be sweet, well-mannered and humble gentlemen who just happened to be one of the finest rock bands of all time. While I am not going to minimize the importance of Motown songwriting from Smokey Robinson to Holland-Dozier-Holland or the crucial role sexy singers like Diana Ross and Smokey (again!) brought to the table, I can't underestimate the support that their backing players lent them.

Anyone who loves the music of Motown will love this film.

Movie Review: The Greatest of all time !!
Summary: 5 Stars

It would be difficult for me to write anything that has not been written about this fantastic tribute to the greatest group of musicians ever assembled in one place .... so many times over the years so called all star groups have been put together but this protrays THE dream team of musicians ! I have lost track of the number of these CDs that I have given to friends and family and I am on here now to order another copy maybe two ! This history of music is a must for anyone and everyone that enjoys music .... if this does not touch every emotion that you have then you have no emotions .... these musicians are not AN All Star group they are THE All Star group.

Movie Review: unsung heroes get their due
Summary: 5 Stars

Everyone knows what Motown music is, but almost no one knows the Funk Brothers. They were the behind the scenes studio band of that powerful music movement, and played on more number one hits than the Beatles, Rolling Stones or Elvis Presley combined. This documentary tells their story and ends with a reunion concert of the aging veterans in Detroit.

Movie Review: Who knew???
Summary: 5 Stars

Everyone should watch this dvd. It is very well done, and exposes the true artists behind the Motown hits - the studio musicians. Who knew??? Not me, until I watched this great dvd!
