Movie Reviews of Standing In The Shadows of MotownMovie Review: A Great Story Summary: 5 StarsIf you liked Motown Music, you've gotta like this story of the men who made the sound behind it all. Nobody recorded more hits. And the live concert with new artists doing old Motown is great.
Movie Review: Absolutely stunning. Summary: 5 StarsI'm only 26, but I "grew up" listening to Motown thanks to my father. I remember singing along to all these songs in his truck whenever we went somewhere. I was working in a video store when this came out and we put it on to have some music playing throughout the day. But we couldn't keep it in stock! Everytime it was playing someone would come up and ask what it was and then ask to rent it. So finally I bought a copy to keep in the store and a copy to give to my father for Father's Day. You wouldn't believe his reaction, he absolutely loved it. Now for my review: Stellar. Bootsy is probably the weakest link, but he's more than made up for by Ben Harper and Joan Osbourne (whose version of "What Becomes of the Broken Hearted" makes me want to weep). This is a must-own for any fan of music, be it Motown or not.
Movie Review: Worth every penny! Summary: 5 StarsGreat! Thankfully, the story of these talented musicians who created the Motown sound was told before they are all gone. The recent passing of Joe Hunter, keyboardist, makes viewing this documentary even more timely. It is filled with great music. Joan Osborn's rendition of "What Becomes of the Broken-hearted" will knock your socks off.
Movie Review: Standing in the Shadows of Motown Summary: 5 StarsAwesome documentary, the music is so powerful. I like many others did not know the Funk Brothers Band had such influence over so many hits. You will truly enjoy this movie turn on the surround sound, kick back and enjoy the music. All I can add is WOW!!!!!
Movie Review: Best music documentary I've ever seen! Summary: 5 StarsAs a drummer in high school who played jazz in the early 60s, I highly recommend this DVD. After the Beatles came out bands started popping up all around my home town and I realized I could make money playing rock. When learning MOTOWN songs I thought the singers were good but always wanted to know who played the music behind them; they were fantastic but never mentioned. Now I know who they were. Now I know who made up the "My Girl" lick! Joan Osborne singing "Heat Wave" is worth the price of the DVD! This is MUST viewing for anybody who played in bands in the 60s or 70s. The Funk Brothers finally get recognition! If I could rate this DVD higher than 5 stars I would. The bonus features are better than the movie!
