Movie Reviews of Standing In The Shadows of MotownMovie Review: Funk Brothers and Motown Summary: 5 StarsThis DVD is an amazing story of the little known Motown house band "The Funk Brothers" who had a major impact on pop music. Anyone who grew up in the 1960`s and 1970`s will perobably instantly recognize the hit songs these guys provided the music for. It`s waaaaay cool to hear these songs via modern recording equipment that demonstrates that these guys were some of the best musicians of their time. I ordered several copies for friends and everybody has been absolutely amazed. A must have for anybody into popular music history.
Movie Review: Standing in the Shadow of Motown Summary: 5 StarsThis is one of the best documentaries I have ever seen regarding Motown's origins, the musicians who created that sound, their stories, and how Motown changed the sound of pop music in the sixties. If you like soul music and you want to see a fascinating documentary, buy this DVD.

Movie Review: Okay, but.... Summary: 2 StarsIf you want to check out a better music documentary, then I would check out DIG. I was personally disappointed with this, because even though Jamerson is featured on the cover, it does not really go into much detail about this tortured genius or his relationship with the rest of the band. And let's face it, if you are a bass player, then you can appreciate the genius of this guy. Maybe it would be better if they just created a movie around this guy. Focus was really the weak part of this doc. You really did not get a feel for anyone in the funk brothers or what they were about. Spent alot of time talking with a vibes/percussionist?! C'mon, this was weak, good idea, poor execution. It throws a few good carrots out there about what went on, but then really never delivers.
In conclusion, Jamerson was the genius, and everyone else was along for the ride. Face it, there are few really talented people and then those who ride the shirt tails of others. Don't waste my time spending 20 minutes interviewing a tambourine player.
Movie Review: Musical history Summary: 5 StarsGreat musical history of the Motown sound. Backgrounds on and interviews of the people who made the songs. Many new versions of Motown classics with the original musicians along with new guest vocalists. If you'd like to find out about the musical origins of Motown, it's right here.
