Movie Reviews of Stage Door

Movie Review: Catty House
Summary: 4 Stars

It's interesting that Warner Brothers included "Stage Door" in it's "Classic Comedies" collection. Certainly there is alot of humor in the film but most of it is acerbic and of the gallows variety born from the frustration and desperation of the struggling actresses and dancers who room at the theatrical boarding house. Katharine Hepburn and Ginger Rogers are the film's nominal stars but this is truly an ensemble effort. The film also features Gail Patrick, Lucille Ball, Eve Arden, and Ann Miller in it's impressive cast of young actresses. A standout is Andrea Leeds as a frail actress. Adolphe Menjou is also on hand as an oily theatrical producer. The film is gritty and realistic so do not expect any glitzy production numbers despite the presence of Rogers. The story and dialogue are rich here. About the only thing that mars the film is a melodramatic ending but, hey, that's show biz.

Movie Review: Cute little film
Summary: 4 Stars

The Bottom Line:

A fairly stagebound film (its origins on the boards are obvious) but nonetheless an enjoyable one, Stage Door follows the lives of several wannabe actresses all living in the same New York boarding house during the Depression; a fun estrogen-laden story with an effective performance by Hepburn in the lead, it's not a terribly memorable film but it's a pleasant 90 minutes.

Movie Review: Wonderful Women!
Summary: 4 Stars

Fast snappy dialogue and a window into another world oddly like our own. Imagine a movie with lots of high powered female characters, none of whom have had surgery to their faces to adhere to some imposed idea of beauty as conformity, who, as characters, are competing for success based on personal merit and individuality? Watch this film and show it to young people.

Movie Review: Stage Door, Oldie but Goodie
Summary: 4 Stars

This is one of my favorite old movies. It depicts the hardships and rewards of life as a performing artist. I sent this to my 22 year old daughter who is a movie buff and a dancer. She thoroughly enjoyed it.

Movie Review: Stage Door
Summary: 4 Stars

Enjoyed the fast paced comedy. Especially with young Lucille Ball, Kathryn Hepburn and Ginger Rogers.
