Movie Reviews of Stage DoorMovie Review: The Miracle of Stage Door Summary: 5 Stars
Stage Door is a wonderful film with a stellar cast. In the first few minutes, Ginger Rogers, Katherine Hepburn, Lucille Ball, Ann Miller and Eve Arden appear among others. Each cast member has their shining moment but the acting prizes are meant for Katherine Hepburn and Ginger Rogers. The story takes place in a boarding house for women who are trying to get into the theatre as actors and dancers. They suffer depression, heartbreak, poverty and even malnutrition. Katherine Hepburn plays a young woman from a wealthy family who attempts to live as a struggling actress to see if she can "make it". Another young woman named Ann is hoping to get a part in a new play "Enchanted April" but loses it when Katherine Hepburn's father buys the rights to the play and posts money for the production unbeknownst to Katherine. The final scenes are touching and heartbreaking. A wonderful film. The extras are very good too. A Lux Radio Theater broadcast highlights Ginger Rogers acting gifts. What a star!
Movie Review: THE FOOTLIGHT CLUB... Summary: 5 Stars
Excellent film of the George S.KaufMan-Edna Ferber play about young Broadway hopefuls staying at The Footlight Club, a boarding house for young actresses. Katharine Hepburn is the rich one trying to make it on her own as a new arrival, forced to room with tough Ginger Rogers who's barely getting by. Others include Lucille Ball, Eve Arden (who wears a cat around her neck) and an astonishingly young Ann Miller. Terrific ensemble cast gives plenty of room to watch the soon stars to be (Ball, Arden and Miller). The film is a "comedy-drama" but features enough bite and serious situations to just merit drama. Nominated for four Oscars including Best Picture and Best Supporting Actress for Andrea Leeds as a doomed young actress who finds herself cast aside after once scoring a hit on stage. Oddly, Leeds faded into obscurity after this. Adolphe Menjou also stars as a snakey producer with a lecherous eye for young talent. Wonderful showcase for a wonderful cast. Good DVD print. Enjoy this one.
Movie Review: A classic masterpiece Summary: 5 Stars
A must see for classic film buffs. It's a great theatrical film. Stellar cast with perfect acting from everyone. Fast paced dialogues, very witty and integrated in the evolution of the story. Perfect direction and camera work. It has something of Elia Kazan (without the sexual innuendos) and George Cukor in it. This is theater adapted to the screen. I hardly noticed the time pass, and this is the best sign that it was a great film.
Then we have Katherine Hepburn in a role that must have been a challenge for her at that early stage of her career, and one can't help fixing all the attention on her; Ginger Rogers does a wonderful work, very natural, actually all the cast are great and each one adds a different ingredients to their roles. Everything works out perfect. It's an intelligent and emotional film, and great entertainment. I am glad I can add one more masterpiece to my collection of classic films.
Movie Review: Ah, the theater! Summary: 5 Stars
I've loved this movie for years, rented it through Netflix and didn't want to give it back, and finally took the plunge and bought my own copy. I've already watched it three or four times and do not expect to get tired of it any time soon. The characters, all would-be actresses living in a New York boarding house, are distinct and interesting. There is humor, pathos, and an outstanding performance by a young Katherine Hepburn as a millionaire's daughter who doesn't understand just how vulnerable her housemates are to the whims and appetites of producers. The stellar cast includes Lucille Ball, Ginger Rogers, Adolphe Menjou, Eve Arden, and little-known performer Andrea Leeds in an Oscar-nominated performance as the actress who has the talent but not the resilient personality necessary for success in the theater. Just a great movie.
Movie Review: WOW... Summary: 5 Stars
Don't let it fool you, it says Katharine Hepburn is the star, but the real star is ANDREA LEEDS. I was so greatly moved by her performance in this, I cried when I saw the outcome, and her REALISTIC portrayal in this movie was so powerful, that's why I cried. I saw her in the Goldwyn Follies, made in the same year as this, and I thougt she was just an ordinary actress in that, but in here, she was PHENOMENAL. Andrea Leeds was a great actress who never had a real break in Hollywood. If she did, she wouldn't be in supporting roles.
