Movie Reviews of SplendorMovie Review: Good, but not Araki's best... Summary: 3 Stars
I know that this movie is not in the same vein as The Doom Generation or Nowhere...but I like those alot better. Splendor was good, I just really didn't like Kathleen Robertson's character in this film. I mean, Gregg Araki definately has alot of talent...but I just didn't think it was as good as he could have made it. I wasn't expecting anything from the afore mentioned films. Don't get me wrong...I liked this movie, I was just hoping for something just a tad different. Oh well, it was still a damn good movie.
Movie Review: Watchable, to say the least Summary: 2 Stars
My friend and I rented this movie at the last minute, hoping for something different. Well, it isn't different. A chick in love with two guys... wow, how original. I didn't care at all about the characters or the lame story. It is watchable and somewhat amusing, but that's about it.
Movie Review: Araki descending Summary: 1 Stars
To anyone thinking of buying or even renting this film: I cannot dissuade you enough. It is nearly impossible for me to believe that this movie was made by the same man who helmed The Doom Generation. It looks and feels like a bad Fox sitcom, and worst of all, its protagonist is the pinnacle of shallow conceit and selfishness. The dramatic question is ultimately, "Do I use ONE guy to avoid facing the consequences of my actions, or TWO?" Our heroine's only motivation is to find the most convenient and comfortable situation for herself, no matter who she hurts, and the only reason she is allowed to get away with it is that she's "cute". Had she been less classically attractive but more self assured... I would have said "No audience, or even character in the movie, would have allowed her to use their emotions in this way", but the fact is, no one with any self-assurance would have behaved as she does.By the by, I hate to ruin the tension for anyone who will eventually see this, but I must note that this is another in a long line of films (The Object of My Affection is another that jumps to mind) wherein many of the painful situations and decisions that fall upon the protagonists could have been avoided with the responsible use of one of those little latex things they sell at drug stores - condoms, I think they're called. This movie gives women a bad name; avoid it like the plague!
Movie Review: Love Araki, Hate this movie. Summary: 1 Stars
I too must echo the sentiment expressed earlier in these reviews. The female lead is the most selfish, unsympathetic character I believe I've EVER seen in a movie. She uses and abuses EVERY man that she comes across. Forcing each adoring suitor to abide by her wants and desires if they wish to have any sort of relationship with her. I simply cannot bring myself to feel any shred of pity for Robertson's character as she jumps from one emotional freak out to the next. Dragging her lovers unwillingly along for the ride and playing them off of one another to get what she wants out of each relationship (guy 1 = sex, guy 2 = emotional/Intellectual support, guy 3 = MONEY).I will simply ask this question: If the female lead was replaced by a MALE lead, who treated WOMEN in the same way that Kathleen Robertson's character does to the three men "in her life", do you think that this movie would still be "crazy and kooky fun"? I, personally, don't think so. I think that you can see where I'm going with this. Go rent Doomed Generation, Nowhere or Totally... if you want a real taste of Araki.
Movie Review: Wow, Now Here's an Important Movie! Summary: 1 Stars
Because gosh, you know what America needs? Sexual freedom. I mean, we really only THOUGHT we were liberated, sleeping with anything and everything that takes our fancy--but we weren't. What we NEED to do is to combine the promiscuous experiences, so we can collect venereal diseases and birth children of confused parentage even faster! Splendor shows us just what we're missing as it invites us to liberate ourselves from primitive notions like jealousy and knowing who the hell your father is. Don't let people judge you, man, as long as you're having fun, cos isn't that what it's all about? Me, I'm about promiscuous polyamory! Way to go, Splendor, lead the way!
