Movie Review: Araki Examines Contemporary Relationships
Summary: 4 Stars

SPLENDOR is a quick little film that once again demonstrates writer/director Gregg Araki's talent in making big social comments out of just a little idea. Though this may not be one of his most successful films, it certainly has enough going for it to give it a look.

Narrated by flippant, kooky, slightly irritatingly shallow Veronica (Kathleen Robertson) who also is the main character of the story, we find that Veronica (aka V aka Ron) has been on a dry run for a love life for a long time, and just when she thinks she'll never find her man, up pops Halloween, and with her best friend Mike (Kelly MacDonald) she ventures into a party where she meets not one but two candidates for relationship - Abel (hunky Jonathan Schaech) who is a would be writer and is inept at about everything social and Zed (also hunky Matt Keeslar) who is a drummer whose intellect and socialization skills don't go far beyond his drumsticks. Veronica beds them both, finds them equally attractive and eventually the three become a ménage à trois in the same apartment. The two men, while transiently jealous of each other, ultimately find happiness in Veronica's breadwinning capabilities and both truly love her and each other. Things become strained when Veronica learns she is pregnant!

Meanwhile, Veronica is offered upward mobility by yet another hunk Ernest (Eric Mabius) who represents stability and money whereas Abel and Zed represent only passion. Considering her pregnant life choices she agrees to marry Ernest despite her lack of loving him and all proceeds towards the wedding day when Abel and Zed decide to make changes in the plans.

Schaech, Mabius and Keeslar provide sufficient eye candy to overcome a strained script. Had Veronica been cast differently the story may have had a better impact, but as it is this remains a fun, spunky movie that for Araki fans is a good diversion. Grady Harp, November 05

Movie Review: Cute.
Summary: 4 Stars

I really got off watching this video. The movie starts with the delicate image of a ménage a trios in full heated action as seen through the discerning eye of a colorized lens. HitchCOCK, movie over. If there was only a virtual reality type deal where I could download myself into the movie and become one of the characters - I'd like to become the woman, because she's getting all the action. She's dating two guys. How did this arrangement come about, you ask, for her to be dating two guys? Well, that's just what the first act of the movie is about. There are a lot of meet cutes, as Roger Ebert calls it. Then a third party comes into view, a Hollywood type, who threatens to steal our sweet little princess away. The third act is whether she will go with the two dudes, or Mr. Third. There are lots of colors in this film, lots of sweet sight cinematography and sets, hunky actors, cute storyline, cute action, cute dialog... This movie is a big kissable teddy bear. Wrap your arms around it and enjoy. PS This is a good date movie, good for foreplay.

Movie Review: two guys and a girl (no pizza place.. )
Summary: 4 Stars

Can one woman really love two men?? will she be happy if she chooses only one of them? which one should she choose?? What happens when she gets preganant?? These are all questions that are answered in Gregg Araki's first mainstream film.. Kathleen robertson plays a young woman looking for love (and boy does she find it).. On a night out with her bizzarre (lesbian?) friend, she meets a handsome inteligent man (Jonathon Schaech) and a SEXY drummer (Matt Keeslar). She gives her number to one and has sex with the other.. she then begins to date them both.. they find out and instead of making her choose, they move in with her.. but will it work out??? can the three of them really be happy??? It's threesome meets the odd couple.. a fantastic film that is very funny and touching.. a must see..

Movie Review: Good movie ... but no "edge"
Summary: 4 Stars

Araki says he was inspired by the screwball comedies of the 30s and 40s in making Splendor, and it shows. Within the context of being a comedy, it's surprisingly frank about the sexual aspects of Robertson's 3-way relationship. I could have done without the pratfalls, and with a bit more character development for Zed and Abel (played by Johnathan Schaech, and sadly not by James Duvall as suggested by a previous reviewer). Spectacularly filmed and edited with all the Araki trademarks in place. It's just NOT as edgy and satisfying as "Nowhere" or "Doom Generation." I think Araki's mellowing out ... maybe he'll find a new, laidback voice.

Movie Review: Witty, hip comedy
Summary: 4 Stars

This is Gregg Araki's most tasteful, amusing movie to date. It's a fast paced journey through the lives of three hip twenty-somethings. One is a drummer, one a writer and the girls is a actress. I would have liked to see the guys fall in love with each other too but their focus remained on the girl. I would have liked to see this story develop on a little bit more of an erotic track but that's not what Araki had in mind. Overall it was imaginative, sexy and hip. A great date movie whether your straight, gay or anything in between.
