Movie Reviews of Spiritual LoveMovie Review: a great supernatural HK thriller/comedy/love story Summary: 5 Stars
This film is about a man called Lao K ( Chow Yun Fat ) who falls in love with a gorgeous ghost called Wei Hsiao-Tieh ( Cherie Chung ). He is currently in an unstable relationship with crazy man eater May ( Pauline Wong ).
He finds a letter inside an old desk that he purchases, from a random woman called Hsiao-Tieh explaining how her sad life has been in the past, and that her fortune teller tells her that when she dies, she is to marry an ugly and evil man in the spirit world. She dies at the young age of 20. The marriage gets
arranged for the two dead people by their families. She fears this greatly and the only thing she can think of to escape being
doomed forever with this man is to find a man born in the same
yang day, month and year as her, and wiling to do a ritual that will take 3 years off his life span. Luckily for Hsiao-Tieh, Lao K matches these requirements and does the ritual without hesitation, reincarnating her instantly.
Hsiao-Tieh escapes her horrible husband and is reincarnated on earth once again, where she comes to find the man who saved her.
Lao K rescues a young woman from drowning in a waterfront and she is none other than Hsiao-Tieh. They fall in love with each other and have a romantic time together.
Lao K and 6'3 ( his deaf mute friend ) get into trouble with a triad gang, Hsiao-Tieh comes to rescue them - this is where Cherie Chung shows off her superb acrobatic fighting skills in beautiful style.
Later on, Lao's cheating ex partner May comes back pleading for help because her new lover is leaving her, but Lao K is no longer
interested. This infuriates her so she comes up with an evil plot to kill them. This ultimately leads to a classic supernatural showdown between May and Hsiao-Tieh, who has a plan to rid of May... by getting her evil husband to destroy her and save Lao K... but the price she must pay for that is to go back to the spirit world with her husband forever.....
Chow Yun Fat is playing a much different role in Spiritual Love than in most of his other films. Still, he doesnt let up as he fits in this role nicely and shows great acting talent. In my opinion, Cherie Chung is the most gorgeous girl ever in this film, and not only does she have angelic glowing looks, she also does a great job acting in her role as the ghost lover of Lao K.
This is a touching film with a few nice touches of comedy thrown in. The ending is extremely sad though, but it puts the relationship of man/ghost in its place and makes sense, although myself and alot of you who watch this film just wish that it didnt have to end like that.
If you want a truly classic HK supernatural ghost thriller/romance film, then check this beauty out NOW.
