Movie Reviews of Spider-Man - The '67 Collection (6 Volume Animated Set)

Movie Review: Vintage Spidey Yet Not Perfect
Summary: 3 Stars

Yes, This is the DVD Box Set we've waited for,

It immediately brought back all childhood memories of Spiderman especially the swinging, jazzin, bebopping, soundtrack. I was patting my foot throughout the entire first viewing of this set. This is the quintessential Spiderman Box Set that spawned the recent incarnation of live action movies. It's the ultimate for any Spidey lover. I absolutely LOVED discs 1-3, However after that it's a downward spiral. To me it was almost unbearable to watch the remaining DVDs after the 3rd one. This was due to an abrupt change in the production team/animators. Definately NOT for the better! I remember as a kid I watched this show (religiously) And I can recall that after a certain while I just didn't like the latter episodes for reasons that I couldn't explain. As a child I didn't quite understand what happened but I knew it wasn't anything like the earlier episodes. So I'd watch the first few minutes and if it appeared to be any of the "new" episodes (produced by the Bahshi team) I'd change the channel right away.

My only wish is that this box set had been segregated (by the early years and the later years/animation team), Into 2 volumes. I definately wouldn't have purchased the later years. That's why I can only give this a 3 star rating. Only 3 of the 6 DVD's are worthwhile. The latter 3 are a waste of time (and effort to watch) as they lack the luster and integrity of the early 3.
Let the buyer beware....

Movie Review: Some bloopers to watch out for!
Summary: 2 Stars

I loved these cartoons as a kid. A lot were on the Wee Willie Webber show in Philadelphia. As an adult I can see so many flaws. I'll list them for your amusement.

1) The store in the opening scenes is first seen as JEWLERY (no typo by me) store...in the next swing by it is spelled correctly as JEWELRY.

2) Unless spiderman has several suits and changed them in mid flight there were many errors in continuity. The spider on his back (looks more like a tic) sometimes had six legs, sometimes eight...in some very long shots, 4.

The spider on his chest was sometimes the same as on his back, or a more spidery-looking version.

3) In many episodes, Spiderman would see trouble at Point A, change into his suit, swing all the way through New York to arrive at Point A again???

4) Many scenes were borrowed from other episodes and thrown in making you think you saw that episode before. ex:mole people episodes.

I guess this is why cartoons were meant for kids!

Movie Review: Remembered as being great as a kid turning out to be terribly bad as an adult
Summary: 2 Stars

I was a big fan of Spider-Man as a kid and later on as I got older I enjoyed the comic books. I was looking forward to seeing this cartoon but I was disapointed in it. I am not sure if I saw this cartoon as a kid or a different one(I was born in 71). If so it is an example of something remembered as being great as a kid turning out to be terribly bad as an adult. What makes it so bad is they totally dropped the teen angst and troubles of Peter Parker. They give Spider-Man a cheesy Superman hero type of a voice that does not match the character. Worse the animation is cheap and they use the same shots over and over and over ad nauseum until you are ready to tear your hair out. If you must rent this don't go beyond the first 3 discs. At least these have some of the classic villians like Green Goblin, Vulture, etc. There are also some funny scenes with J Jonah Jameson and Betty Brant. Discs 4-6 are awful and so bad noone should be tortured by having to watch them. The first 3 or 4 episodes of disc 4 are especially bad in that they use the same caves, castles, monsters, etc. over and over and over again. Why do they have Spider-Man fighting primitive tribal men, giant bugs, aliens, demons, etc?? It looks as though other cartoons with leftover footage were cut and pasted together with existing Sider-Man footage from earlier episodes. Worst of all is disc 6 where they actually take footage of previous Spider-Man episodes and recycle them for new episodes!! Not just background scenes but major parts of the stories!! Reminds me of Ed Wood. Just awful and embarrasing. 2 stars for discs 1-3 Negative stars for discs 4-6.

Movie Review: great sense of humour
Summary: 5 Stars

The comics were different from the cartoon. The cartoon was fun and humour all the way. Besides the spot on soundtrack, each piece of music punctuates the story masterly. Its cool, nostalgic and really nothing has come close since. Episodes like The Fantastic Fakir (can a title possibly be more imaginative or humourous?)Or a villain's name: Dr Von Schlick (who's weapon is oil, a "greasy" villain). If somebody dont get the purpose of this collection of Lawrence Gantry animation, simply switch off your brain and engage nostalgia and simple humour. In my opinion, these Spidey cartoons are a number candidate for the Nobel Peace prize! However, the smiles only go as far as disk 3. The magic ends at episode 6: Trick or Treachery. For some reason, a change of writers perhaps, or a change of producers ( I dont know) but the humour and story and villains dies disasterously. The rest of disk after this is simply dire. The animation was always corny but fun. But after disk 3, its downright the end. But with lines like "I think my spider sense is tingling..." Do enjoy the first 3 disks to the full

Movie Review: Clean FUN!
Summary: 5 Stars

Quite simply, I picked this DVD collection for my son to watch as he is a Spiderman fan. It's what I call a "cleaner" version of Spiderman as opposed to the movies that have come out in recent years. My son is only 6 and I believe these to be more family-friendly and appropriate for his age. He loves them!
