Movie Reviews of Soylent GreenMovie Review: ZPG means more for you and me! Summary: 5 Stars
Soylent Green came out a full decade before I was even born. I heard about this movie, only by references from my father, and choice Biology teachers/professors. After watching this movie after extensively studying the environment, biology, and ethics in college, I realize that this movie is probably one of the best warnings to those, planning to have more than 2 kids.... the warning is: The more people you have at the table, the smaller each piece of pie becomes. This may be a science FICTION film, but the implications that the film explores about population growth are priceless, and are a lesson that every human being should become aware of.
On a lighter note, this movie is very fun to watch - if for nothing, other than nostalgia. The sets are entertaining - and the view of the future looked a helluva lot like the 70's, if you ask me. Charlton Heston is entertaining - though I find it interesting that he acted in such a philosophical film, and is now a NRA spokesman with Alzheimer's. Danger! Danger!
This film should be required curriculum in high school biology classes.
Movie Review: Youve Got To Tell Them !!!! Soylent Green Is......GREAT!!! Summary: 5 Stars
I just wanted to comment on this DVD version of Soylent Green. Its very good. I saw things that were too dark in the VHS version or were not seen because of the "Formatted for TV" style, but now thanks to widescreen, its all there. You actually get a real feel for the cramped apartment that Thorn and Sol share. For the first time I could see the work area that Sol uses for his research as well as the bunk he used for a bed and all the books he had there on his shelves. Maybe not a big deal for some, but it does enhance the overall impression of their living quarters, but hey, didnt know it was there till now. In the VHS version, when Simonsons assasin is sneaking into the Chelsea Towers West complex it was so dark you couldnt see what him moving across the dividing moat or the hugh comoplex of the area, kinda like, where is he? Well now I can follow his path and not go, huh?!?!! The DVD is clean and sharp, and even if youve seen Soylent Green a zillion times on Video like myself, the DVD will make it appear new again in so many ways. Its a worthwile investement IMHO.
Movie Review: The Future I Fear Summary: 5 Stars
Never mind the secret of Soylent Green; this movie is scary enough without it. Made in 1973, riding the wave of the burgeoning environmental movement, and starring Charlton Heston fresh from his Planet of the Ape series. Portrays a dystopian future suffering from global warming and overpopulation. Most people in the movie have never even seen a tree, let alone a 'green space'. Yet the quality of life has declined so gradually (like the frog in the pot of slowly heating water) that they aren't even aware of what they're missing, of how much better it used to be.
E.O. Wilson (in "Biophilia") worried about such a future and compared it to the life of a chimpanzee in a lab. Assuming the lab techs were ethical and made some effort to give the chimp toys and attention, it might know some semblance of happiness. But we would know there were a whole range of experiences (e.g. swinging through trees) that this animal was uniquely evolved to appreciate and would never know...
Soylent Green is the future we all should fear. Everyone should see this movie.
Movie Review: "SOYLENT GREEN" Charlton Heston, Edward G.Robinson Summary: 5 Stars
This is an excellent science fiction movie, in my opinion Charlton Heston made two of his very best ones during the 1970's, first "The Omega Man"(1971) and the second one "Soylent Green" released in 1973. This is a great film, which in my opinion depicts what could happen as a result of global warming. However it is dissapointing to see that the great actor Edward G.Robinson who co-starred with Heston in this film is not even mentioned among the cast of this great film. In fact it was Robinson's last role in a film as he died shortly afterwards. This proves one more time, that in life you must do everything and anything except die, because if you do,in many or most cases it will not be long before you're forgotten. If there is a film in which one of Hollywood's greatest talents Edward G.Robinson should be remembered by, because it was his very last role on the screen is definitely this one, "Soylent Green". I highly recommend it.
Movie Review: A great film beautifully restored Summary: 5 Stars
The DVD release of this great Charlton Heston classic is a marvel to behold. It's in widescreen format and all the TV/VHS fog is gone, gone, gone; the images and sounds are as clear and crisp as the dawning day. This film deserves such treatment. Along with _Planet of the Apes_ and _The Omega Man_, it's part of Heston's series of three 'last man' films, and it's much better than _The Omega Man_. (As movie buffs know, it's also the touching final film appearance of the late Edward G. Robinson.) A classic in its genre, this film is based on Harry Harrison's 'Make Room! Make Room!' and is a somewhat heavy-handed morality play on the subject of Malthusian population dynamics. It's amazing that it works as well as it does. But it really does work; this is one of the all-time greats of SF filmdom, right up to and including its famous closing moments. Put this on your shelf next to Heston's _Planet of the Apes_.
