Movie Reviews of Sophie's Choice

Movie Review: The Best Actress Ever
Summary: 5 Stars

No exaggeration: This movie features the most sublime, nuanced performance by an actress I have ever seen.

For the first half of the film, Meryl Streep is utterly convincing as a mysterious Polish woman living in New York after WWII. Midway through the film, she plays an earlier, very different version of her character in a concentration camp in Auschwitz. I won't bother ladling on the superlatives; Meryl rocks, and she has never rocked harder than in this role.

As for the rest, Kevin Kline does a good job being alternately charming and swarthily menacing, and Peter Macnichol is his usual useless adenoidal self. (Is he three feet tall?) Trust me, it's all about Meryl: And that is more than enough.

Movie Review: Excellent Film
Summary: 5 Stars

Sophie's Choice is the first Meryl Streep movie that I saw and this film lead me into her many other films. Her portrayl of a polish immigrant was done so well it was hard for me to believe that is was Meryl Streep. Streep has a way of convincing people when she acts. I really felt as if I was watching the real account of a polish woman that had been in a concentration camp during World War II. This movie is moving and very sad because of what Sophie went through and the choices that she had to make just so that she could live. Streep is an excellent actress and I would watch this film again. I give this film 5 stars because of the directing and the acting from the actors in this film.

Movie Review: We Are So Fortunate
Summary: 5 Stars

I don't think anyone who has actually felt this movie in their hearts would ever be able to pass judgement upon any of the characters. I can not imagine the personal struggle that Sophie felt, not only with her newfound friends, but more impotantly, her family she left behind. How do you make that choice? Sophie did what she had to do to survive. I hope and pray that I will never have to choose between my children, because I would most likely..... choose to end my life.

We are so fortunate that we live in a free country, free from tyrannical, biblical, economic, oh, wait who am I kidding????? I am still proud to be an American, where at least I know I'm free!!!!

Movie Review: Streep's Sophie will haunt you.
Summary: 5 Stars

I'm not sure whether I would call this a great film, for it fails to convey the nuances and complexities of characterization of the novel, and also, its elements of wry humor, but Meryl Streep as Sophie is simply overwhelmingly heart-rending in her portrayal of a person whose soul is destroyed as a consequence of having to live with the memory of how she was forced to cope with the Nazi genocide. I can't watch it without being profoundly shaken. Kevin Kline and Peter McNichols are excellent as well, but it is Streep as the doomed Sophie who is the heart and soul of this movie.

Movie Review: EXCELLENT
Summary: 5 Stars

After watching the movie, I was so moved by it that I couldn't think of anything but the movie for a few days. This is an excellent movie, with excellent actors & director. The movie is NOT long at all, & I enjoyed every minute of it. The choice that Sophie made is not soley based on 'the boy or the girl', but also why she chose to lie about her 'ashamed' past; & the 2 guys that loved her. Her final choice is death...sadly. This is a must see movie. I recommend to everybody who's interested in a serious movie.
