Movie Reviews of Songcatcher

Movie Review: Little known film
Summary: 5 Stars

I got this movie from netflix, and was very happy I did. I was somewhat surprised by the PG-13 rating, because of the lesbian sub-plot, but the movie was incredible. I find it interesting that the only two-star ratings I noticed were because of this part of the storyline. I sometimes think that these homophobes only bother to rate movies with this type of storyline just to further their own homophobic agenda. So sad. Though I am straight, I see no problem with women loving women or men loving men. I didn't read all the reviews, but I wonder if any of them had anything derogatory to say about the man who was cheating on his wife with another women. I bet they'd have had plenty to say if he'd been cheating with another man.

Movie Review: WELL WORTH THE WAIT
Summary: 5 Stars

I have waited almost 2 years to see this film, and it was well worth the wait. As an extra in the film, I got to be on the set for 3 days, and I interracted with all of the film's stars those 3 days. It was both a learning experience for me, and a pleasure to watch such wonderful actors in motion first hand. I was one of the featured square dancers in the barn dance scene. The film is even more beautiful than I could have imagined...and I lived in the midst of those mountains before moving to VA. But to see them on film thru the eyes of Maggie Greenwald, is breathtaking. The film is a wonderful representation of the mountain music and people. I highly reccomend it.

Movie Review: The Music Lifts You Up
Summary: 5 Stars

The Songcatcher is beautiful, cinematically and musically. A feast for passionate lovers of old folk music. A seemingly straight-forward story of a doctor of music discovering the generations-old songs of mountain people while visiting her sister, this film explores the power of song and music, life in a small insular community, political and economic pressures facing small rural communities in the early part of the 20th century and last but not least: romantic and lusty love. Cameo appearances by some fabulous veteran songsters, this film made me remember how much I love these old ballads from England, Ireland and Scotland, with an early American spin on them.

Movie Review: A delightful surprise
Summary: 5 Stars

I had never heard of this movie, perhaps it received no promotion at all. I found it delightful on many levels, but most outstanding was the music of the mountain people and I believe that I will buy the CD. I thought the filming was carefully and craftfully done, the plot well developed and the acting (particularly Pat Carroll, who I haven't seen work in years) terrific.

Please note that part of the plot of this movie involves women's struggles in the early 1900s and there is a (gasp!) lesbian relationship. Rush Limbaugh types will HATE this movie, so don't watch it and spare us your "unbiased" opinions.

Movie Review: The SongCatcher
Summary: 5 Stars

In Excellent Condition, packaged well, delivery on time. Songs that were sang in the hills of VA were also sang in KY, W.V, TN, and OH. I'm sure other States, too. The people worked hard and their music and songs was a part of their lives, their hearts, and their souls. There are many living that same way today. Many are happier living that way and strangers not always welcome, they are private! Song and Music will warm them fast! Many great singers from KY are; The Crabb Gospel Singers, Loretta Lynn, Tom T Hall, Ricky Skaggs, and many others. I can relate to this movie!
