Movie Reviews of Song for My Father

Movie Review: Three Great Shows
Summary: 5 Stars

This DVD is three sets, all in black and white. The first is Horace Silver on piano with Bill Hardman on trumpet, Bennie Maupin on tenor, Johnny Williams on bass, and Billy Cobham on drums. Filmed in Copenhagen in April 1968. Good quality with Nutville and Song For My Father for about 35 minutes.
The second set is hosted by Oscar Brown Jr. and is Shelly Mann's group which includes Conte Condoli on trumpet, Richie Kamuca on tenor, Russ Freeman on piano, Monty Budwig on bass, of course Shelly Mann on drums. The songs are The King Swings, Fan Tan, The Isolated Pawn, Speak Low with the theme on opening and closing, about 28 minutes. This was filmed in Los Angeles in October of 1962 and is actually superior in the production in both the actual setting and the filming was grade A. This was state of the art for 1962.
The third set is the Teddy Edwards Sextet, also hosted by Oscar Brown Jr. You have Freddie Hill on trumpet, Richard Boone on trombone, John Houston on piano, Stan Gilbert on bass, Doug Sides on drums and of course Teddy Edwards on tenor. It was filmed in October of 1962. Same as the previous set, beautiful production for 1962. At about 25 minutes you have The Cellar Dweller, Sunset Eyes, Afraid of Love, Good Gravy, and Velvet Mist, with the theme front and back.
This is all great stuff.
