Movie Reviews of Something's Gotta Give

Movie Review: It's all about the divine Miss Keaton!
Summary: 5 Stars

Diane Keaton walks away with this movie....."pants down" (literaly). I counted 69 actors and actresses and other than Jack (who is always memorable) you will never forget Diane Keaton in this role.....she owns it! Talk about taking a risk as an actress. I mean she goes almost completely nude at an age when Hollywood (of all people) forbids such behaviour as being "uncommercial". But besides her beautiful body (even in her late fifties) Diane finaly puts to rest all those walk through performances of her past. You know the ones; Reds, Mrs. Soffel, The Lemon Sisters, Sleeper, Father of the Bride's, etc. In this movie it's all about Diane and she absolutely shines and proves why she has survived after all these years as a talent. She is simply spectacular and must be seen. Imagine me.....in my late fifties.....enfactuated with a woman in her late fifties (Diane). I have to ask.....Is there something wrong with me? Can this be normal? Shouldn't I be consumed with a Lindsay, Brittany, or Jessica or whatever their young names are? Hugh? NO WAY! I wouldn't trade my new found fantasy for Diane for all the bulimic and anorexic twenty year old actresses in all of Hollywood. Diane.....you had me from hello!

Movie Review: She Shoulda Stuck with Keanu...
Summary: 5 Stars

I found it an enchanting movie, which (rather like the best of Mozart) took formulas and conventions, and created something more than the sum of it's semi-predicatable parts. I underline the semi -- there are unexpected twists! Diane Keaton is pitch perfect -- looking every one of her beautiful 57 years old. An inspiration for those of us coming to terms with reaching "a certain age."

I may be in the minority, but I really wanted to see Keaton's character stay with Reeves. Not only because he's better-looking (in this context, perhaps that is damning him with faint praise), but because of the interactions between his character and Keaton's, in which it evident how much he values the entire person that is "Erica Berry" -- unconditional love such as that is exceedingly rare. It would also have been interesting for Harry to have to come to grips with how he's lived his life, a bit like Julia Roberts in "My Best Friend's Wedding." We can't always have what we want, and sometimes it is too late for "I'm sorry, I've changed" to make it all okay. I perhaps should learn that lesson while submitting this review...after all, it is JUST A MOVIE!

Movie Review: So much fun!!
Summary: 5 Stars

This movie is hilarious!!! We could not stop laughing. Jack plays a man who dates no one over 30. He goes with his then girl friend to her mother's (Diane) beach house in the Hamptons. Unbeknownst to them, her mother and aunt are there! After a little embarrassment, they all decide to spend the weekend there. Jack has a heart attack and they rush him to the hospital. Once released he must stay nearby for a few more days and the only one available to take care of him is Diane. Thus the story begins of their fling--there are so many funny moments of trying to read the clock, mixing up their reading glasses, Jack walking in on Diane naked... the story continues with more fun. The movie is full of truths--men do like younger women, but also shows that middle aged women are still beautiful as well. Keaneu Reeves plays the doctor and he is the only bad part of the movie--he's such a terrible actor. He should only do The Matrix movies and Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure he was fine--so either a surfer dude or someone with no personality or emotion like Neo in the Matrix. Other than that, this movie is a real winner! Lots of fun!

Movie Review: Mid-Life crisis at any age!
Summary: 5 Stars

Something's Gotta Give is a romantic comedy that can be enjoyed by viewers of all ages. Columbia Pictures presents an all-star cast in this 128 minute feature. Writer/Director Nancy Meyers, who wrote "What Women Want", puts a new twist on a mid-life crisis. Harry, played by Jack Nicholson, a 63 year old get-around who has never dated women under the age of 30, doesn't experience his crisis until he meets Erica Barry (Diane Keaton). As a beautiful, intelligent, successful play-write Keaton is the mother of Harry's latest fling. After a heart-attack in Keaton's home, he finds himself at her mercy physically and then emotionally. Dr. Julian Mercer (Keanu Reeves) who is Nicholson's doctor falls for Keaton and overlooks the age difference to see the beautiful person that she is. Meanwhile, Harry realizes that he's about to lose the love of his life. When a movie lets the viewer laugh and cry it deserves five stars. Something's Gotta Give will do that for you. This is a must-see movie that explores the changes that result from divorce and heartbreak and how they can be overcome. Watch it with an open mind!

Movie Review: Laugh, Cry and Relate to Harry and Erica
Summary: 5 Stars

As a 'mature aged' person I related heavily on many different levels to 'Something's Gotta Give'. Jack Nicholson, as much as he is older, overweight and wearing increased wrinkles..this is life, it happens to all of us. Diane Keaton is the same (but not overweight). 'Unfortunate' camera angles that were deliberate were ingenious, thoughtful and provided the honest picture of 'mature aged' persons in all our glory. This film is life, life as I have experienced, life as many of us have experienced. 'Something's Gotta Give' stimulates self-reflection. I went home stimulated and reflective with many long forgotten personal life episodes coming to mind (and will continue coming to mind). I am remembering things in my past, considering my future and reflecting on the road I have trod and the road I am following. Paris for my and my partners birthday next year perhaps? Throughout the film the sound track is brilliant and it was so pleasing to enjoy the same music I listen to at home instead of roaring and aurally abusing music that is predominant in so many other films. A 'Must See' Movie. Well Done!
