Movie Reviews of Some Like It HotMovie Review: What's in the heat? Summary: 4 Stars
A perfect product, as everyone seems to think. Marilyn lights up the sky and Curtis is magnificent, as is Lemmon. (I just read in Clive James' Cultural Amnesia that Marilyn gave the crew a hard time with her amateurish acting. You wouldn't believe it when you watch the film. James is a huge admirer of Curtis, by the way, which is fine with me.)
And yet: isn't this perfect castle based on sand, considering how dumb the story actually is? Who can really laugh about a male sax player and a male `bull fiddle' player who dress up as girls and join a girl band to hide from the mob? Or about a dumb old rich guy who insists on marrying Jack Lemmon in drag?
I remember that my admiration was limited when I watched it first, which must have been 40 years ago. Yes, lots of nice little jokes, but the main joke was always as dumb as it appears today. I watched it now again to check on other observations about the aging process of comedies. My conclusion about this one: it has not aged, it was in reality never all that great. To enjoy it fully you have to leave your common sense at the check in counter. A really satisfactory comedy does not have to be `unbelievable'. It can make do with exaggeration.
Movie Review: A riot of laughter! Summary: 4 Stars
This is a hilarious movie wherein two musicians accidentally witness a mob murder during the Prohibition era and have to consequently hide-out as females in an all girl band. With the lead singer being Marilyn Monroe, well, there are some hilarious scenes! I always feel sorry for Marilyn Monroe when I see her movies. I get the impression she doesn't fully comprehend the possible dangers that are out there when a woman is so overtly sensuous. And I definitely get that feeling in this movie. She's so naturally all woman, but unfortunately, in this world, that can lead to trouble. And well, I guess it did.
Anyway, the movie is a riot of laughter. And Marilyn really shines.
Movie Review: Legendary movie, but... Summary: 4 Stars
Gone With The Wind, Casablanca, The Wizard Of Oz and Some Like it Hot are all landmark films.
But unlike the others, Some Like It Hot suffers because it fails to stay funny and hold interest for almost two hours. There are compensations in the funny lines, Marilyn and Tony & Jack. And the last line is worth the wait, but it DOES drag(hehehe) at times. George Raft is wonderful in his selfparody, but though it is a great film with magic momements - as a whole; a classic it ain`t.
Movie Review: Jack Lemmon is Hot! Summary: 4 Stars
Marilyn isn't bad either. This was a funny movie. What could have made it better - color. Jack and Tony Curtis fleeing witnesses to a Chicago gangland slaying hide from the pursuit by disguising themselves as women and joining a girl's band. Old time actors George Raft and Joe E. Brown contribute to the hilarious scenes that follow. Of course Tony gets Marilyn - big whoopee- Joe gets Jack.
Movie Review: A good flick... Summary: 4 Stars
This is a funny movie, with situational laughs, an interesting premise and good performances. It's a breezy comedy with smart writing and clever wit that you just don't see lately, what with our seemingly national obsession with fart humor and gross out jokes...
