Movie Reviews of Some Like It Hot

Movie Review: Half A Century Old, It Still Delivers Plenty Of Laughs
Summary: 5 Stars

In lesser hands this comedy classic could have easily been a yawn. Instead Billy Wilder created a screen masterpiece, which the AFI so fittingly designated as the Number-One America flim comedy of all time. Flawlessly casting Jack Lemmon and Tony Curtis as musicians looking to flee the Chicago underworld, only because they had inadvertly wittnessed a mob rub-out. Hence they join an all-girl band, don high heels and handbags and the laughs begin.

Was there ever a more fitting role for Marilyn Monroe? I don't think so. And judging by the films lasting endurance, I'm not alone. Her character, Suger Kane has all the wide-eyed innocense of Shirley Temple and the raw sex appeal of..of..of..well Marilyn Monroe.

In short, here's as near a picture-perfect comedy as ever there was. From the zanny rail-car scenes, where Suger first befriends Daphnie, (Lemmon) and Josephine, (Curtis) to the moonlight dinner scene aboard "Shell-Oil's" yachet the laughs just keep comming and comming. The AFI gave it their Number-One slot and I will too.

Movie Review: As Fresh and Lively as Ever. Pure 5 Star Entertainment.
Summary: 5 Stars

"Some Like It Hot" has Everything Going for it, Hilarious Performances by Jack Lemmon and Tony Curtis, who are Both in their Prime, a Cheerfully Cute Performance by Marilyn Monroe, in the Best Performace of her Career, Top Notch Directing by Billy Wilder, who Hurdled the Production problems (Famous Fueds between the Cast and Crew) and Created one of the Greatest Examples of Spot on Comedic Film-making in History.

Every Performance, every Production Number, Set, Costume.. Everything Clicks, Even Wilder's use of Black and White Photography is Fitting. (I'd Usually take Colour over B and W any day, but Not Here) The Screenplay gets Maximum Mileage out of it's Cross-Dressing Gimmick and Wilder never lets the film get Silly, or Boring. The Pacing is Perfect, Supporting Performances are Wonderful. (Especially George Raft and Joe E Brown)

I Cannot Speak Highly Enough of this Landmark Film, It's Pure Movie Magic, from Start to Finish.

Summary: 5 Stars

In 1929 during the St. Valentines Day massacre, two traveling musicians, witness one of the hits initiated by the mob. The only way the duo can think of to avoid being discovered is to join an all female band playing in Florida as women. Joe is looking forward to the gig, so that he can spend more time with Sugar while Jerry is horrified to find himself fighting off the advances of a rich suitor. Joe the consummate womanizer finally gets to see what it is like to be on the other side of the coin to see what he has been dishing out for years.

Many see this as a ground breaking movie especially for the 1950's with the theme of cross dressing and gender roles, but I just enjoyed Tony Curtis and Jack Lemmon giving some of the best comedic performances of their careers, and Marilyn Monroe shining her brightest. It is laugh out loud funny, and a movie you will watch over and over again.

Movie Review: Witty and Humorous
Summary: 5 Stars

I adore this movie. It is well written, well directed and a well paced story. Billy Wilder writes a very funny script, and gives a brilliant direction in this wonderful screwball comedy. With their energetic yet contrasting personas, Jack Lemmon and Tony Curtis make an ideal leading pair for a movie of this nature. Joe and Jerry are musicians trying to make a living taking in many jobs throughout Chicago. When they witness a mob hit, they dress up as women and join a women's jazz band headed for Miami. In the band, they meet Sugar, a girl trying to find a nice millionaire to marry. Joe then decides to dress as a millionaire to impress her, but this doesn't impress Jerry who has a real millionaire going after him. When the mob arrives in Miami, madcap mayhem ensures. Tony Curtis, Jack Lemmon, and Marilyn Monroe are all wonderful in possibly their best performances.

Movie Review: very funny

i just received this dvd in the mail a few days ago, and i absolutely loved it!! besides that it is in black & white(which i wish was in color), it's pretty much perfect. i can't say enough about the acting of curtis & lemmons dressed as girls after they witness a shooting. they looked so pretty hehe. lemmons was just hilarious and curtis was just so handsome. this film has a little of everything: comedy, romance & action. joe(curtis) pretended to be a millionaire so he could court monroe(sugar cane). it was so romantic. after watching them together, you kind of wish they were actually together in real life. two goodlooking couple. an old rich man tries to court daphne(lemmons)who was annoyed at first..ended up engaged to him. anyways, it's a very good movie. dont hesitate.....just watch it!
