Movie Reviews of Some Came Running

Movie Review: Sweetheart
Summary: 5 Stars

The film that cinched it for Sinatra, launched MacLaine and got Martin into a whole new ball game. Vincente Minnelli directed it, using location filming (in Madison, Indiana) as another soundstage ~ unsettling and epic. Elmer Bernstein orchestrated the melodrama with melodramatic ablomb with assist from Cahn & Van Heuson's "To Love And Be Loved." The only weak note perhaps is the James Jones story, one of those post-war morality handwringers John O'Hara cranked out annually in the 50's. Nevertheless, the narrative excesses give our actors something to work with, and boy do they ever work it. These three are terrifying real. (I've known all of 'em at one point in my life or another.) Dealt less ring-a-ding parts, Martha Hyer and Arthur Kennedy, playing primarily off Sinatra, breathe believability into the repression they represent. Perhaps one aspect of this film that is overlooked is that MacLaine's character also rejects her opportunity for love, the goon, even if ultimately he annihilates her as surely as she would have (eventually) annihilated Sinatra's character. And, yes, the schoolteacher would have offered another form of annihilation, in that Dave Hirsh would have ended up as frustrated and phony as his brother. What a horrible hall of mirrors with no out at all except for Martin's Bama who, a man with no second thoughts, called his own nihilistic shots. Man what a show. I'm way biased, this film, especially MacLaine in it, has been one of my favoritest guilty pleasures for decades.

Movie Review: Good movie to watch
Summary: 5 Stars

Who would think that small town life is boring? Not if you watched this film. Frank Sinatra plays this soldier who comes home from WW2. Somewhere along the way, he hooks up with Shirley McClaine, who follows him, but she has some unwelcome company of her own following her. He meets up with his brother, who is a successful owner of a jewelry store and into his assistant because his social climbing wife is too busy being preoccupied with being a pillar of the community, and the daughter getting caught up in stuff she don't need to be. Sinatra hooks up with Dean Martin, who is a gambler, and the two get together and do some high rolling of their own. Of course, Shirley is there, looking like a lovesick puppy, knowing all along that Sinatra has his eye on Martha Hyer, who appreciates his talent, as well as him but is too proud and high class to admit that to herself. For the life of me, I cannot understand the Hirsch, Ginny hookup. clearly he tolerates her, clearly despite her own flaws, she loves him although she can't leave him, yet all along, she has a man in the background who she can't seem to shake. An very interesting movie.

Movie Review: Excellent but a tear jerker
Summary: 5 Stars

This is an excellent movie involving three of the best actors. I don't remember if it received any academy award nominations, but it should have. A good story and superb acting especially by Ms. Maclaine.
