Movie Reviews of Soldier's Girl

Movie Review: Something Beautiful
Summary: 5 Stars

What love has been known to cross almost every boundary that has ever been required for all humanity? "Soldier's Girl", the tragic and true love story between a soldier and a transgender male, is that very love. With it's portrayal of the Barry Winchell and Calpurnia Addams story, and heartwrenching performances by the actors, this is a movie one must see to disover the destruction of bigotry and the effects of true love that is pure in it's honesty, emotions and support. Although the turn out of the story may turn ugly, you know that, in the end, it is something more beautiful than anything in this world. That the unuinhibited relationship is what we all strive for in love. And that Barry Winchell is the very person that we all wish to be.

R.I.P - Barry Winchell 1977-1999

Movie Review: One of the Best Movies of the Year
Summary: 5 Stars

I am an avid moviegoer, especially where arthouse cinema is concerned. "A Soldier's Girl" ranks along "Angels in America" as the best movies of 2003 (though neither were technically theatrical releases). Troy Garrity's Golden Globe nominated performance was passionate, touching and sensitive, but at the same time decidely masculine. He and Lee Pace seemed so natural together. Shawn Hatosy (Borstal Boy) gave another captivating performance. The score is quite memorable as well: the Patsy Cline (?) songs were a great complement. Its dramatic layering bears repeated viewing. In this age of CBS-style preferential programming/decision-making, we should applaud Showtime's bravery for producing this minor masterpiece.

Movie Review: One of the Most Heart Wrenching Movie's I've Ever Seen
Summary: 5 Stars

Few movies really, I mean REALLY, touch my heart! This movie, though short, was well acted, well written, and down right phenomenal with its content. I challenge you to have a "dry eye" by the end of the movie. I cannot imagine the incredible loss Barry's family and Calpurnia must have felt during the period of Barry's death; it had to be mind-boggling at most. From the beginning of the movie until the end, I felt like I knew Barry and Calpurnia personally. I am glad that the DVD will be released next month. It will be one that I can't wait to add to my library. I not only recommend this movie to you, but I implore you to ponder its delicate content, and you will find it absolutely inspiring. Watch and enjoy!

Movie Review: Brutally Honest
Summary: 5 Stars

Living in Nashville during the timeframe of these events, and having known Calpernia as a wonderful onstage presense, watching this fine movie is like going back in time. From the uncanny resemblence to the showbar at the "connection" in Nashville, the bar that was actually the background for most of the story, to the very real setting that is Fort Campbell, barracs and all. A SOLDIER'S GIRL is a very honest very real portrayal of actual events as they happened. Lee Pace's version of Calpernia is a little more direct that the real gal, but otherwise dead on. Troy Garity's performance is riviting as the soldier who found his perfect girl! This is as real as it gets!!
Highly recommended!!!

Movie Review: Poignant and heart-wrenching
Summary: 5 Stars

I am the mother of a M to F daughter. I watched this film while my daughter was at college, and taped it for her to view. It is an amazing film.

As a mother of a transgender/transsexual daughter it is upsetting to see there are still so many misconceptions about the community.

Movies like Soldier's Girl, Southern Comfort and Normal, etc., will hopefully help others to see that people deserve to be who they really are inside. If people are allowed to be their true selves, what a happier, healthier world this will be.

Thanks to the filmmakers and the stars.

Thanks most of all to the real people who were part of this story, and who had the courage and conviction to let this film be made.
