Movie Reviews of Soldier's Girl

Movie Review: " Love in a world of hate "
Summary: 5 Stars

It has always amazed me how our country professes it's superiority over other nations by proclaiming itself the epicenter of freedom, but it's nearly always the last to endorse it. It's noble attributes are not automatic, as each isolated, maligned and vilified segment of society has to endure ridicule until a certain number of deaths have accumulated to grudgingly acknowledge what others already accept. This is one extraordinary and courageous story about Barry Winchell (Troy Garity) who dreamed of being a soldier and serve his country. Believing he could do so with pride and honor, became an elite soldier and part of the Armed Forces. However he quickly learns, despite the overwhelming power of the military, it's still terrifies leaders that a gay man could virtually destroy the mightiest nation on earth with a forbidden kiss. Taken from the private life, military court records and public accounts of Barry Winchell, the young man visits a night club frequented by cross dressers, where he is attracted to and eventually falls in love with Calpernia Addams. (Lee Pace) Also known as 'Scottie' to his friends, the two begin a deep and passionate affair which led Barry to believe he had found true love. Unfortunately, bigoted fellow soldiers Justin Fisher and Calvin Glover (Shawn Hatosy, Philip Eddolls) become hate-filled adversaries of Barry and his lover and seek at first to torment and later to destroy their Homosexual relationship. What this film fails to accentuate is the ambivalent attitude of the military as it discovers to what length soldiers will go to destroy the personal choice of others. Touching and emotional, the film does allow some convincing interludes and compassionate notions between the two lovers. Indeed, their singular affair will at the very least give hope to other gays that eventually, the United States as well as the Military will accept the notion that there is more at stake than homophobic fear. ****

Movie Review: Heart-Wrenchingly True Story
Summary: 5 Stars

This is one of the few movies that has ever been able to make me cry. And by cry I mean bawl my eyes out.

The story follows young Barry Winchell (Troy Garity Barbershop (Special Edition)), a soldier in the army, who goes with his new friends to a transgender nightclub. There he meets Calpernia Adams (Lee Pace Pushing Daisies - The Complete First Season), a performer not quite finished with the transformation from a man into a woman. Against all odds, Winchell ends up falling for Calpernia, to the disgust of Winchell's roommate (Shawn Hatosy Southland: The Complete First Season (Uncensored)) and another young fellow soldier. To them, Winchell's love isn't directed toward a woman, but a man. The two homophobics decide to take matters into their own hands, with horrific results that would shake the lives of everyone involved.

I had read what actually happened in real life, before I saw this movie, so I definitely knew what to expect. It is an awful ending (emotional-wise) and the knowledge that the story line didn't come from some writer's imagination, but actually happened, just made it even worse. The whole time I was thinking, "I can't believe that someone would actually do this. What is wrong with people?"

Even knowing that it is an extremely sad ending, overall is was an amazing movie. Lee Pace did such a good job playing Calpernia that at times I forgot that Caplernia wasn't played by a woman.

Definitely a must see movie.

Movie Review: Heart breaking, respectful and a MUST SEE!!!!
Summary: 5 Stars

"Soldier's Girl" is an example of the important and well made movies that cable tv is capable of producing. This film, based on the murder of Barry Winchell, is a testament to good film making, good direction and incredible acting. This could have been a movie that focused on the sensationalism of the subject matter but the director made this into a respectful and heart breaking love story.

The story is about a young man based at Fort Cambell, Kentucky, and the harrassment he suffers from those in his barracks over a relationship he begins with a transgendered performer named Calpernia. After meeting her at a club in Nashville, Tennessee, the young private becomes smitten and falls in love, a decision that ultimately leads to his mistreatment by other soldiers and eventually his death.

Troy Garity gives a dignified performance and deserved the attention and the award nominations he received for this role. Lee Pace also does well in his role as Calpernia, the transgendered woman that Barry falls in love with. Shawn Hatosy plays Justin, the young man who sets all the tragic events in emotion. He is a disturbed young man, with a drinking and drug problem with prejudices that he cannot get past.

The dvd also features interviews with the actors as well as the real Calpernia and the mother of victim, Barry Winchell. The dvd is a good dvd overall but it is the film and its message of love and accepting people as they are that is the most important aspect you should take away from this movie. I highly recommend this film. I will be adding it to my dvd collection!

Movie Review: Some justice for Barry
Summary: 5 Stars

I have never reviewed a movie before until I watched Soldier's Girl. This is an absolutely beautiful film, virtuously retold by wonderful young actors who have obviously been inspired to do justice to the truth.

Here is a true story about Barry Winchell, a young soldier from the heartland and fresh out of basic training setting out somewhat hesitantly into dangerous sexual territory. And what danger there is in wait for this man! His military leaders and comrades have made life on base for him, or for anyone awakening to gay feelings, a living hell. It's a wonder that he didn't snap from the constant drumming hostility and it's really a testament to his bravery and maturity that he withstood that humiliating barrage without complaining.

Troy Garity's performance as Barry is, I think, Oscar worthy and Lee Pace is completely convincing as the transgendered club performer Calpurnia Addams. Sean Hatosy plays the manipulative Pvt Fisher as a kind of "Iago" character so well that I didn't realize until later how seamless his performance is. And the young actor who plays Barry's killer really captures the feeble-minded brutishness of Pvt Glover to perfection. I really must hand it to Showtime for hiring Frank Pierson and all these incredible actors to portray this still fresh tragedy with such courage.

The DVD version which I bought has some great interviews with the actors and some of the actual persons that helps fill out the total story. I recommend this film to anyone in general and specifically to any young man gay or gay-curious who might be thinking of joining the military.
