Movie Review: Jigging and Reeling and Singing
Summary: 5 Stars
For me, very little compares to watching a group of musicians play their material. It comes to life in the performance, and being able to perform well is a litmus test of a band's talent.
Solas is one of the premiere American based Celtic bands. I had heard them on CD before this DVD first came out (1998), but seeing them live gave me an even deeper respect for them as musicians and interpreters. This line-up of the band -- including Karen Casey and John Doyle -- was tight and professional as well as playful and electrifying on stage. The set weaves traditional tunes and contemporary themes together with a deft hand, making the tradtional seem contemporary while not losing the gist and verve of it. And when they play a modern American folk tune -- such as Woody Guthrie's "Pastures of Plenty" -- it seems to come right out of the Celtic tradtion, too. This is alternately a foot-tapping, step-dancing yet at times mournful and melancholy set of tunes, and I recommend it highly. Karen Casey's singing is superb and the playing is adroit and yet fluid. Like their more recent DVD -- "Reunion" -- it fosters an intimacy with the band that only intensifies one's love of the music!

The explosion of interest in Celtic music has trained a bright spotlight on the Irish-American band Solas, whose eclectic menu of songs veers alternately toward American shores and back toward County Kerry. Solas Live, featuring a 1998 performance in Burlington, Vermont, filmed for Vermont Public Television, boasts no tricky camera angles or graphics-enhanced effects, but simply allows Solas's infectious music to take center stage. Vocalist Karan Casey (who later left the band to pursue a solo career) is in top form, spinning yarns to introduce the songs and then breaking into her pure soprano. Fiddler Winifred Horan surely ranks among the finest contemporary Celtic musicians, and her lightning-quick playing is truly breathtaking. Highlights include Woody Guthrie's "Pastures of Plenty," the very traditional-sounding "She Is Like the Swallow," and the toe-tapping "Big Reel of Ballynacally." And Seamus Egan's fiery flute on "Patsy Touhey's Set" will stay with you long after the disc is over. --Anne Hurley
