Movie Reviews of SmokeMovie Review: Y'know What? Summary: 5 Stars
This is one of the best movies I've ever seen.
I had read a Paul Auster novel before (BOOK OF ILLUSIONS) and it was a fine read, but this film that he wrote and co-directed just surpasses any possible expectations I could've possibly had going in.
I highly reccomend that you put captions on this, so you don't miss a line. This is what cinema was truly meant to be. Tremendous acting, brilliant script, deep characters, thoughtful camera work...flawless.
The plot is irrelevant. It is one of those films that you just have to let unfold so to admire the intertwining of the lives that are portrayed.
Bravo to Keitel, Hurt, Whittaker, and all the actors and crew members who managed to pull this off.
Do not hesitate in checking this out.
Movie Review: As in real life... Summary: 5 Stars
"Smoke" simply is one of the best films I have ever seen! The acting is magnificent, the characters are so incredibly real. But most of all, what I like about this movie is the warmth of the characters. These persons are humans, warm, loving human beings with their hearts at the right place. They are not so sympathetic at first, but as in real life sometimes, as one gets to know them better, they all of a sudden become one's closest friends. I really was a bit sad when the film was over (and unfortunately the sequel is nowhere as good as this film, although it's a good movie too).
So, if you want to know what life is all about, watch this film...
Movie Review: Best of the genre Summary: 5 Stars
Slice o' life. Not too heavy, not too light. Absolutely believable. Very moving, but doesn't pander to cheap emotionalism. Even the dialogue is recognizable as something you might actually hear in real life. Substitutes a story for the usual violence, sex and high-decibel action. Acting, character presentation superb. For those not too cynical to enjoy a great, yet realistic feel-good movie, this is a good one. I use other high-rating picks of Amazon Five-Star reviewers of this movie as a rough guide for evaluating movies I haven't seen.
Movie Review: the story within the story Summary: 5 Stars
there's nothing i can add to the wonderful NY reviewers' comments here, except to say that if you enjoy this movie, watch for "auggie wren's christmas story" - the story within the film of auggie tracking down the magazine thief using the lost wallet. like "smoke," (also based on a story by auster) it's available in book form, and its charming small size makes it an excellent stocking stuffer. i heartily recommend ALL of auster's novels to those who appreciate downhome writing, NY style. auster is the flannery o'connor of the northeast.
Movie Review: A NEW YORK STATE OF MIND Summary: 5 Stars
This is a movie with an emphasis on dialogue, ambiance, and characterization. The acting is superb, and the script is top-drawer. SMOKE is a funny, sometimes poignant, slice-of-life film with a whole lot of heart.
