Simply a classic in great acting with a plot that keeps you truly engaged. The twists and turns of the novel are faithfully followed, making it a treasure that can be watched over and over again.

Movie Review: The Best Yet
Summary: 5 Stars

The acting is the best, the story wraps you up until the end and the ending is yet to be told. I watched this on television three times and it still is fresh and exciting. By all means, get it.

Movie Review: Smiley's People
Summary: 5 Stars

I consider this to be one of the top 10 best films ever! If you like the book you'r going to love this film.

Movie Review: Classic

Love the BBC and Alec Guiness. Almost as compelling as Tinker Tinker Soldier Spy

Movie Review: Smiley's Triumph
Summary: 4 Stars

George Smiley is a retired (not entirely by choice) spymaster who is called back into service when an old associate of his is murdered. The murder seems almost inconsequential on the surface, but George suspects differently. As he backtracks through the victim's recent activities, it becomes clear that the man was onto something significant. As with any John LaCarre story, the plot is labyrinthine and I don't want to give away too much for fear of spoiling the surprises. I will just add that the story remains true to the novel, and fans should be glad of that.

Smiley's People was a follow up to the tremendously successful Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, which also starred Alec Guinness. Guinness is perfect as Smiley and plays the part in a masterfully understated way. At the same time, Smiley's character is sometimes a bit more vigorous in the novel and that Guinness portrays those moments equally well. In addition to Alec Guinness returning, nearly all of the characters from Tinker Tailor are portrayed by the same people this time around. The performances are all rock solid.

The only criticism I would make of this miniseries is that it would be very difficult to follow if you haven't read the book. Little things such as subtitles indicating what city a new scene takes place in would cost almost nothing yet be a tremendous help in deciphering the events for a newcomer. Unfortunately, there is no help whatsoever in framing the story so the viewer is left to decipher it himself. For those familiar with the book, it isn't a significant issue, but I don't know that it would be worth the pain of figuring it out from scratch.

This BBC miniseries is a faithful and well-done adaptation of the book Smiley's People by John LaCarre. Guinness is George Smiley come to life and this story is the culmination of his life's work. I recommend it without reserve to those familiar with the novel, but others enter at their own risk.
