Movie Reviews of Smiley's People

Movie Review: Finally to DVD!!!
Summary: 5 Stars

Alec Guinness is genious in his role. A great show with a little to satisfy everyone's palate. I used to watch this great show on PBS so long ago. This show offers espionage, sabotage, government corruption, spy games, deceit, sex, lies, and videotape. Hitchcockish? Yes, but its' twists and turns will keep you guessing to the end. I was able to get an advanced copy of this yesterday and I sat through all 3 disks. Fantastic transfer considering the age of the source print. Colors are vibrant, blacks are nice and deep with very, very little rimming and no edge enhancement was apparant. Sound is Dolby 2.0 at best but dialogue is clear and sound effects are very convincing. Great set to pick up!

Movie Review: Simply A Masteroiece
Summary: 5 Stars

Many of the reviews on this page have covered the video in great detail. What I want to add is simply this: if you like acting at its highest level, if you enjoy intricate plots that require the viewer's rapt attention, if you enjoy superb detail and nuance, and, finally, if you enjoy a master dramatic craftsman--Alec Guiness--at the height of his acting prowess---then Smiley's people is a dvd you will treasure with each viewing. A great, great film...and a more than worthy successor to it's bookend first film, Tinker, Tailor.

Movie Review: Tremendous, astounding, riveting Sir Alec Guiness
Summary: 5 Stars

I finally ordered this DVD and I was amazed at the quiet, subtle power of Alec Guiness in the role of "Smiley." I enjoyed "Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy" but there was a little too much of secondary characters and not enough of Smiley. However, "Smiley's People" was perfect. The script and story were riveting and all the supporting actors from Eileen Atkins to Beryl Reid were dead-on pitch perfect.

I can't wait to have time to sit through the whole show again. Do yourself and favor and buy yourself one of the best!

Movie Review: I have watched this DVD at least once a month for years.
Summary: 5 Stars

I am addicted to this film. Alec Guinness is amazing.

I keep finding reasons to give it as a gift to people... Like I'm trying to woo them into the cult of Smiley. I can't put my finger on one reason that it's so outstanding--there are so many. The acting is superb. The cinematography is careful, the photography is innovative at the right moments. The story is addictive. The music is intoxicating.

You will love it!

Movie Review: Smiley's People
Summary: 5 Stars

I remember watching this series when it first aired and never thought I'd see it again. Great acting, wonderful shots of 60's-era London and, of course, a superb script. I'd forgotten how short the shows were, though, and played two in a row before realising that I'd prefer to stretch the segments over six weeks, just as happened on TV. Next, I'll purchase Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy, even though it preceded Smiley's People.
