Movie Reviews of Slumber Party Massacre
Movie Review: A passable slasher with some unique touches
Summary: 3 Stars
Several reviewers have already gone into depth concerning this movie's background, and quite well I might add. Hence I'm not going to reiterate except to say that this is an 80's slasher movie with a feminist flavor that shows.
The Slumber Party Massacre has a bare bones premise: Girl's parents go out of town, she decides to throw a little get together with her friends from school, this unfortunately coincides with the escape of a multiple murderer that carries out his craft with a large drill. Havoc ensues.
The simplicity of this movie is really what makes it fun, I literally didn't have to think at all. Your brain will simply become a sedentary blob throughout the short 75 minute duration of The SPM. The cliche-ness of the whole thing suggests that it is a satire the slasher genre, which in fact it was originally intended to be, but by opting to go the more serious route it acquires the campy feel much more easily. One of the more memorable scenes features a pizza guy showing up at the door with both eyes drilled out, which they proceed to drag the body inside and eat the pizza anyway, just to give an idea of what to expect in regards to how seriously you should take this.
As far as thing kind of thing goes Slumber Party Massacre is above average. The acting is among some of the worst ever, and it's not exactly loaded with gore, but it makes up for these short comings with a dark atmosphere and a nice gritty look. You also get some great creepy synth music that no slasher movie is complete without. Overall if you like old by-the-numbers horror movies that provide a few laughs at the same time, it's definietly worth your time tracking down a copy of this one.
