Movie Reviews of Slaughterhouse-Five

Movie Review: We will miss Kurt, but His Legacy Still Remains
Summary: 5 Stars

Having heard of his passing this title came up on one of his numerous eulogies. I remebered it like it was yesterday, (it was) as one of my favorites that I only had on a very dusty VHS recording. No longer having a VCR, natural progression dictated an upgrade to Digital media and with it an addition to "my library", not the house library which covers a-z in themes and ideologies. It now joins the other greats I have amassed as a cornerstone piece. I will be adding other classics also but this will continue to be a favorite.
The story is clever and actually touches on several truisims, as we get older we tend to "time Travel" thru our memeries. A touch, a sound, a smell, sets us all on a journey back through our lives, not that we can ammend them as with the main character, but to re-live them through our memories time and time again.
Thanks Kurt, You will be missed,

Rikk Olson

Movie Review: "He loved his dog."
Summary: 5 Stars

Vonnegut was asked if he worked with Stephen Geller on the screenplay adaptation. Vonnegut answered that he had only one contact with Geller, when Geller called him on the phone to ask, "If Billy knows how everything is going to turn out, what's his motivation?" Vonnegut answered, "He loves his dog."
I never thought "Slaughterhouse" could be adapted, but in fact, I like the movie fully as much as the book, at least in part because the casting is brilliant, every character.
The book and movie have a peculiar structure, reflecting the thesis about time: Instead of the usual three-act structure, it has a two-act structure, before and after Billy's arrival in Dresden. That scene, with glimpses of the people and the architecture over the exquisite baroque soundtrack, brings tears to my eyes every time.
Bravo, Mssrs. Vonnegut, Geller, and Hill!!!

Movie Review: Billy...The war is over !!!
Summary: 5 Stars

My all time favorite movie , read the book in 1973 and then saw the film on a late nite broadcast in the late 70's...When I got my first Video recorder this was one of the first films I bought....I have been looking to buy this on DVD for a long time and now I have it...The movie is well written and filmed , the music is outstanding and the acting is top notch...The German scenes of camps and halftracks and uniforms are right on the money...The story is a killer , time travel and insanity and fatherhood and anti-war themes run rampant....Dresden and the Feb. 1945 bombing are the central theme though and the storyline of this event is the thread that holds the movie together...Buy this movie and enjoy it many times....You need to view it at least a dozen times to catch all the plots and the dialouge and the great direction that was put into this story...

Movie Review: So it goes
Summary: 5 Stars

Making a visual representaion of a novel is always a challenge. Make it a Kurt Vonnegut novel and it only gets 10 times harder. Therefore I didn't get my expectations up when I decided to watch the film version of Slaughterhouse Five.

However, I was surprised at how well this film did covering such an in depth novel. I found this to be a wonderful portrayal of Pilgrim's extraordinary experiences along with the emotions and the confusion associated with it.

I still do recommend reading the book first since the film does skip a lot of the best phrases, verses, and concepts that make the story so great. Yet the film is a real tribute to a wonderful story.

Movie Review: Better than the book...
Summary: 5 Stars

I love Kurt Vonnegut, and own nearly everything the man has written, mostly dog earned and yellowed after far too many readings. I was at first skeptical, however after viewing this film I can say that never before have I seen a piece of prose transformed into a work of like this. The cinematography is wonderful and the transitions, when Pilgrim leaps from time to time are masterful. The acting is superb, my favorite character being Paul Lazzaro; entirely quotable in every way. This film is well worth the money you spend on it, Vonnegut fans, and film fanatics alike will fall in love with it.
