Movie Review: Six Packed
Summary: 5 Stars
Kenny Rogers and all the kids in their support roles are great. Although I enjoy "The Gambler" and the sequels, I think this is the best movie he ever made. The only objection I have heard to this movie, that was halfway objective, was that the attitude of the kids and language could be improved. Now I understand that judgement, but either you need to get eye surgery or or be realistic about your outlook. When I first saw this movie back when it was first released I fell in love with it. I'm no kid now either, in fact I'm now 54. This movie is realistic and has some great acting and comedy. So if you're concerned about how it will affect kids, why don't you sit down and watch it with them. Everyone should have a laugh or cry. The one kid singing in the RV actually gave me goosebumps. A couple other tunes including a great one, "Love Will Turn You Around", by Kenny nicely backs the movies music.
The storyline is pretty basic stuff. Kenny plays the part of a down on his luck NASCAR driver. Apparently the guy that beat him out of a good backer was underhanded and rigged his car. Into his life six kids come trying to strip his car while it sits on his trailer in a gas station. Next thing you know he hunts them down but instead of prosecuting them he enlists them as his pit crew. A good thing he does because they know how to deal with the jerk that cheated him out of his sponsor. There is some good comedy and drama. No doubt this movie did not have major backing, but it is sad it didn't since I don't recall seeing another movie like it and it has a great deal to offer most people, especially families. The main message is helping each other usually means a win for everyone.
I am happy to see they are finally putting this great movie on DVD. About time! Anyone that enjoys NASCAR should love this movie. For that matter anyone that likes family oriented movies should enjoy it. There is some offensive language so be prepared, but this is far more clean than many movies that children are viewing today. I'm sure your kids have heard offensive language at some point and understand that unfortunately people say it in anger sometimes. Don't let that stop you from getting this delightful movie. I truly wish more family movies like this were made today. With the exception of the Disney movies they are to few and far between from other studios. We must rely on the studios being smart enough to put these classic ones on DVD. I thank whoever was wise enough to make the effort to put this wonderful movie on DVD April 4th, 2006.
