Movie Reviews of Sister ActMovie Review: Heavenly Comic Gem With Whoopi Goldberg In One Of Her Best Roles Summary: 5 Stars
I have always thought that for the most part Hollywood has never utilised properly the great comic abilities of Whoopi Goldberg. Apart from a few comic roles such as her richly deserved Oscar winning performance in "Ghost", she generally has appeared in films on the whole unworthy of her talents. The wonderful "Sister Act", casting Whoopi as a second rate Reno lounge singer hiding out dressed as a nun in a convent from her mobster boyfriend was happily one of the few times where the film role matched Ms. Goldberg's formidable talents. It is without a doubt one of my favourite comedies of recent decades and with its wonderful supporting cast offers a rare opportunity from this period for a large group of women to shine at once in a modern film. The combination of nuns, mobsters, great music and some side splitting humour is a combination made in heaven, to excuse the pun, and Whoopi makes the most of the situation. As with alot of great comedies "Sister Act", also contains moments of great warmth and some often insightful observations of the state of modern organised religion. Full of charm, great comedy and memorable characters "Sister Act", is one film you dont want to miss which goes to prove great comedies for the whole family can still be made in these present times.
Movie Review: Whoopi's Perfect "Act" Summary: 5 Stars
It is no secret that Whoopi Goldberg is an amazing actress. "The Color Purple" anyone? But this is a more modern movie, a movie that anyone could appreciate.
Whoopi plays as Deloris Van Carier, a lounge singer who's married ex-boyfriend (and mobster) is trying to have her killed because she witnessed a murder. So when she goes to the police, they place her in a convent, knowing that no one will suspect to look for her there. At first, she is itching to get out. However, she is given the opportunity to transform the choir from horrible to talented. Their performances at the church start bringing people back into the failing institute.
And the music is extraordinary. The songs that are used were originally at the beginning of the movie as Deloris' Vegas act, but are transformed from cheap lounge songs to beautiful hymns. If the last performance in the movie doesn't send chills down your spine, I don't know what will.
Movie Review: SISTER ACT Summary: 5 Stars
This 1992 is one of the best comedy movies ever! Ever! You can never get tired of Whoopi Goldberg as Las Vegas lounge singer, Delories Van Cartier who becomes Sister Mary Clarence. Deloris witnesses a murder by her married boyfriend (played by Harvey Kietel) and under Reno police orders, she hides out in a covent in san Francisco, California. While there, she goes by the name, Sister Mary Clarence and learns how to adjust to life as a nun and also uses her Las Vegas lounge singing experience to teach her follow nuns in the chior how to sing together as a group.
I loved this movie from beginning to end and is my No. #1 comedy movie of all-time! The center square from the Tom Bergeron-hosted game show, Hollywood Squares (1998-2002) was absolutely hilarious here and so was the whole movie! You will love "SISTER ACT"! Kathy Najimy, Maggie Smith and Mary Wickes also star.
Movie Review: Divine Comedy Summary: 5 Stars
Whoopi Goldberg stars in this wonderful comedy that everyone must see. She plays Delores, a struggling lounge singer in Reno. Her boyfriend Vince gives her his wife's fur coat, and she heads off to confront him. In the process she witnesses a murder, and must run for her protection. She goes to the police who put her in a place that Vince would never suspect, a convent. At first resisting and being difficult, she becomes a nun and must partake in their activities and lifestyle. She is eventually asked to help the choir, which was in poor shape, and she turns it into a celebration and gets people to visit the church again. The nuns even help the community and turn it around. Eventually Vince finds her in which a hilarious pursuit of the nuns in Reno persists. Overall this is a really good comedy from the early 90s, really worth seeing if you haven't yet. One of my favorites.
Movie Review: Pure Fun! Summary: 5 Stars
This movie is Fun, Fun, FUN! The music is irresistible and it delivers laughs every minute. The story follows a low-rent casino singer, Deloris Van Cartier (Whoopi), who witnesses her mobster boyfriend, Vince LaRocca (Harvey Keitel) muder an employee. She goes straight to the police, who hide her from Vince in a convent while preparing for his trial. The Mother Superior (Maggie Smith), puts up with Deloris's unorthodox behavior long enough for her to turn the convent's chior into a swinging, soulfull hit. But when the group gets rave reviews, Vince and his goons go hunting for Deloris. Will they find her?
This movie is purely halarious! Whoopi and Maggie Smith are brilliant, and all of the acting is awesome! The music is toe-tapping (you must buy the soundtrack), and the story is fun! You must watch this movie!
