Movie Reviews of Sink the Bismarck!

Movie Review: The story and acting carry you
Summary: 5 Stars

In this era of elaborate SFX, a 1960 B&W movie of the war at sea might be expected to come up poorly. But the superbly crafted story and steady acting carry you along. While history has been modified here and there, the main points are solidly grounded (reality is almost always more compelling than fantasy: compare the struggle for Tarawa with Helm's Deep). Even though all but the brain dead know what the outcome will be, the level of tension achieved during the hunt for Bismark is remarkable. Viewing this film ought to be compulsory for all directors - story and acting are far more important than SFX.

Movie Review: Topflight war adventure!
Summary: 5 Stars

The legendary and unforgettable German ironclad, that according their creators would be unsinkable (Do you remember related terms respect Titanic?) and the multiple allies handiworks to intend it. The epic and the ineffable destruction is told with admirable precision, following first rate information sources, conducted to one of the most remarkable films of 1960. Lewis Gilbert, the same who would surprise us with Damm the Defiant!.

A true milestone film admired even by Historians and commonly mentioned, here and there.

Movie Review: Memorable
Summary: 5 Stars

Sink the Bismark was made shortly after the actual events took place. Considering the financial shortages the British film industry confronted in those days, Sink the Bismark constitutes a remarcable accomplishment. The actual account of how the great ship was sunk is both exiting and well portrayed using real war footage, and the sript is both well written and plausible, considering the times when the fim was shot. played by actors who are both well known and talented. A must see for World War film II buffs.

Movie Review: An old favorite well preserved
Summary: 5 Stars

I recently picked up this DVD of Sink the Bismarck because it was 1) inexpensive and 2) something I had not seen for a while. It is one of my favorite movies, despite the wholly unnecessary fictional romantic side-story and the historically inaccurate depiction of Admiral Lutjens. It does a very nice job (given the technical capabilities of films back when this was made) of showing the sea battles and has great film of many actual Royal Navy ships.

Movie Review: Never Give Up the Hunt
Summary: 5 Stars

Sink the Bismarck! is one of those rare films where we get to see the action out where it happens on the high seas and back at the underground war room in London during WWII. What a film. It looks wonderful in Cinemascope and some of the stereo effects are really outstanding. This is a great film because it mixes raw courage and tests our emotions to the ugly face of war while never letting us forget why we fight. One of my favorites.
